Scope of Job:
Enhances the effectiveness of the Office of Legal Affairs and Office of Institutional Equity through the creation, preparation, and maintenance of documents and pleadings for review by these offices. Functions as a paralegal, and performs a variety of specialized tasks to support the daily functions of the Office of Legal Affairs, and monitors the progress of tasks for the attorneys.

Description of Duties:
• Drafts assigned agreements, pleadings, policies, letters or other documents either independently or with guidance, depending on the nature and complexity of the document.
• Updates and tracks changes to UTRGV policies as assigned.
• Coordinates the collection of evidence, documents and information concerning legal issues from a variety of internal and external sources; prepares discovery responses or other responses.
• Assists in responding to and coordinating requests from The University of Texas System, the Texas Attorney General’s Office and other agencies regarding claims, lawsuits, and other legal matters.
• Researches, compiles, prepares, and provides legal reports and memoranda to the attorneys in the Office of Legal Affairs, as well as attorneys at the UT System Office of General Counsel.
• Utilizes online resources and law library materials to conduct research at the local, state, and federal levels, as necessary while verifying that research results are standard and consistent.
• Serves as a secondary point of contact for the Office of Legal Affairs, and may screen calls, visitors, and incoming correspondence as needed.
• Maintains and monitors litigation files.
• Helps develop cases by maintaining contact with people involved in the case, scheduling and generating status reports.
• Keeps clients informed as appropriate by maintaining contact and communicating case progress.
• Designs and organizes an office records system to maintain legal files, litigation files, subject files and legal publications in an organized manner for efficient retrieval.
• Maintains reminder systems for legal matters and project completion.
• Provides professional level assistance to the Office of Institutional Equity as needed.
• Assists in handling EEO, Title VII, and Title IX related document requests and in preparing related administrative reports.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

Supervision Received:
General supervision from assigned supervisor.

Supervision Given:
Direct supervision of assigned support staff.

Required Education:
• High School Diploma or equivalent; or• Associate’s Degree or equivalent of sixty (60) hours of undergraduate coursework with five (5) years of the required experience, or• A comparable combination of relevant education and experience (considering education on a 1-on-1 basis to experience).

Licenses/Certifications:
Legal Assistant or Paralegal certification.

Required Experience:
Five (5) years of related experience performed in a legal office setting. Must be knowledgeable in performing research with online resources such as, but not limited to, Lexis-Nexis and Westlaw.

Preferred Experience:
Supervisory experience.

Equipment:
Use of standard office equipment. Must be experienced in the use of standard data processing equipment and software, including spreadsheet, graphics, and presentation applications.

Working Conditions:
Needs to be able to successfully perform all required duties. Work is generally performed in an office environment. UTRGV is a distributed institution, which may require some travel to multiple locations throughout the Rio Grande Valley. Some evening or weekend work may be required to meet assigned deadlines.

Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with a high degree of professionalism, maturity, discretion and integrity in dealing with individuals at all levels of the institution. Excellent organizational, analytical, and problem-solving skills; ability to manage multiple demands, respond effectively within tight deadlines; and adapt to changing priorities and needs while maintaining a strong commitment to customer service and teamwork. Ability to receive, index, summarize, organize and manage large quantities of information, data and documents. Knowledge of legal terminology and litigation matters. Possess excellent research skills. Requires initiative, attention to detail, organizational skills, and strong written and oral communication skills. Demonstrated ability to exercise good judgment in handling sensitive and confidential information and situations. Analytical ability to interpret data, policies and procedures. Ability to exert up to 20 pounds.

A New University with a Long History

The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley was created by the Texas Legislature in 2013 in a historic move that brings together the resources and assets of UT Brownsville and UT Pan American and, for the first time, makes it possible for residents of the Rio Grande Valley to benefit from the Permanent University Fund—a public endowment contributing support to the University of Texas System and the Texas A&M University System.

 

Our new university will also be home to a School of Medicine and will transform Texas and the nation by becoming a leader in student success, teaching, research, and health care. UTRGV will enroll its first class in the fall of 2015, and the School of Medicine will open in 2016.

 

UT Brownsville and UT Pan American

The shared history of The University of Texas Pan American and The University of Texas at Brownsville goes back to 1927, when Edinburg College was founded. In 1973, Pan American opened a second campus in Brownsville, which later became an independent institution of The University of Texas System in 1991. Over the years, the missions and the identities of these great institutions have continually evolved to serve the communities of the Rio Grande Valley.

Now, the evolution and connection between these two institutions is coming full circle as UT Brownsville and UT Pan American are being established as a single, new university and medical school, with a single, new identity—The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley.
