General Summary

The purpose of the TRIO/ Student Support Services academic advisor in University College is to support the retention and graduation of participants of the TRIO / Student Support Services Program. The advisor makes course recommendations and gives academic and personal guidance to all assigned students so that they may persist at and graduate from Illinois State University. Advisor must provide accurate and realistic academic information, and support to an assigned caseload.

Advisors must accurately interpret and relay academic policies and requirements ISU's general education or the Illinois Articulation Initiative, as well as major/minor plans of study. Academic Advisors are expected to have broad and general knowledge about all majors/minors at Illinois State as well as knowledge of additional support services that may be of use to TRIO / SSS students.

Additional Information

This is a non-continuous grant-funded position. Initial appointment is for 12 months. Subsequent one year appointments are possible with renewal on the grant year (Sept. 1-August 31).

Required Qualifications

1. Bachelor's degree.
2. Demonstrated ability and at least one year of experience working in an inclusive environment, and a commitment to personal growth and learning that promotes the richness of a global campus.
3. At least one year of work experience working with first-generation, and/or minority students. Special attention to the social and cultural capital students bring to the college experiences, and resources needed to aid with self-advocacy.
4. Exemplify intercultural fluency through excellent communication skills including verbal, non-verbal, listening, problem solving, public presentations, and teamwork.
5. Ability to multi-task and produce quality work under deadlines in a high pace environment; organizational skills; flexibility in a changing administrative model.
6. Working knowledge of basic office software (word processing, e-mail systems, spreadsheets, Microsoft suite, Campus Solution, appointment manager, and databases, etc.)
7. Ability to work independently, but also work cooperatively within an advisement staff with a student oriented philosophy.
8. Committed to integrity and ethical behavior in consideration of the campus and larger community.
9. Ability to develop and implement programs, workshops, and services to meet grant objectives and requirements. Limited travel to events with day and/or over-night stays.
10. Positive professional demeanor that contributes to a positive and fulfilling work environment. Exhibit professional and growth-minded demeanor that cultivates a culture of understanding and empathy.
11. Evidence of understanding of the issues facing today's first-generation college students as it impacts their academic success.

Desired Qualifications

Master's degree, preferably in Education, College Student Personnel or related field.

Work Hours

Core hours are Monday - Friday, 8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m., with occasional work and/or travel beyond regular office hours for certain activities, programs, and special events.

Functional Expectations

Must be able to complete the following with or without a reasonable accommodation:
1. Ability to effectively communicate on a daily basis.
2. Ability to work for extended periods at computer workstation.
3. Ability to distinguish colors on a monitor.
4. Ability to use a computer in day-to-day work (i.e. type on a keyboard and use a mouse).
5. Ability to conduct or attend meetings in various locations across campus.
6. Ability to maintain a high level of concentration.
7. Ability to perform sedentary work involving sitting the majority of the time.
8. Ability to occasionally lift, move light furniture, stoop, kneel, reach, etc.) for event/program set-up.

Salary Rate / Pay Rate

Salary range is $36,600 to $40,200/year
