Position Summary:

The University of North Carolina (UNC) Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center (LCCC), founded in 1975, is one of 40 National Cancer Institute (NCI)-designated comprehensive cancer centers in the country. The Center’s mission is to reduce cancer occurrence and death in North Carolina and the nation through research, treatment, training and outreach. The Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center is composed of multiple research programs. The Cancer Outcomes Research Program (http://unclineberger.org/outcomes) studies cancer prevention and screening, patterns of care, costs, and outcomes. UNC faculty affiliated with the Cancer Outcomes Research Program are engaged in research with the following themes: Patient-Reported Outcomes (PROs), Comparative Effectiveness, Health Informatics, Cancer Disparities, Quality of Care, Cost and Access to Care, and Health Economics. Research is facilitated by several core resources, including the Patient-Reported Outcomes Core (PRO Core).
The Patient-Reported Outcomes Core (PRO Core) assists cancer outcomes researchers with the intent of bringing the patient’s voice into clinical care. Research projects that are supported by the PRO Core work with a variety of patient-generated health data such as patient-reported outcomes (PROs) (e.g., self-reported symptoms, physical function, and quality of life), as well as data from wearables (e.g., steps, sleep, heart rate), to measure the patient’s experience of disease and treatment. Projects range from measure development and validation, documenting patient experience to inform treatment guidelines or policy, and interventions that aim to provide timely and relevant information to the patient’s clinical care team to inform clinical decisions. PRO Core also provides consultation to investigators regarding the design and implementation of patient-generated data capture in research studies, and a system for data collection. The PRO Core system (https://pro.unc.edu/) enables the administration of surveys via the web, tablet, interactive voice response (IVR), and computer-assisted telephone interviewing (CATI); it supports computer adaptive testing (CAT); it is able to interface with other modes of data collection such as wearable activity trackers; and it allows a high degree of customized survey design, survey scheduling, real-time alerts, longitudinal patient reports, and data dashboards.

This position will work directly with study investigators and staff to design and build study-specific applications that will be used by innovative studies that aim to make a meaningful impact in the lives of persons with cancer and their caregivers. The position will leverage and expand on existing tools and features of PRO Core’s systems. This position will be part of PRO Core’s agile software development team, and will be supervising junior programmers.
Experience with full stack web application development is needed for this position. Skills needed include understanding of database design and optimization, and experience with PHP/JavaScript. An applicant is expected to have extensive experience in the workflow of software development, including version control and documentation. An understanding of the workflow of clinical research studies, HIPAA, clinical care workflows, PHP frameworks such as Laravel, or experience with browser-based programming in frameworks such as Vue.js is preferred.

Educational Requirements:

Master’s, or Bachelor’s and 0 – 2 years’ experience, or will accept a combination of related education and experience in substitution.

Qualifications and Experience:

Essential Requirements
- Experience with designing and maintaining a complex web-based application
