Essential Job Duties:

The Commercial Horticulture Area Position will provide leadership in Gates, Chowan, and Perquimans Counties for the development, implementation, evaluation, and marketing of effective and successful educational programs in the areas of commercial horticulture, forestry and other subject matter areas as deemed appropriate by the County Extension Director. Position is housed in Gates County but involves traveling to all three counties to extend research based programming to Extension clientele.

Duties include: Provide leadership to the planning, implementation, evaluation and reporting of effective educational programs related to commercial horticultural production, environmental stewardship and forestry; function as a cooperative member of an interdisciplinary team that seeks to create integrative programs that meet the needs of targeted audiences; establish and maintain strategic partnerships with professional peers, organizations, institutions, and other agencies to produce innovative techniques that encourage users to adopt and/or implement system approaches for solving problems; oriented to working interpersonally with diverse clientele and being a team player with staff.

Primary Function of Organizational Unit
North Carolina Cooperative Extension gives our residents easy access to the resources and expertise of NC State University and NC A&T State University. Through educational programs, publications, and events, Cooperative Extension field faculty deliver unbiased, research-based information to North Carolina citizens.

Gates, Chowan and Perquimans County are located in the rural northeast regions of NC with a tri-county population of 38,886. Horticulture and forestry industries produce in excess of 24.9M dollars in agriculture income annually. There is an increasing interest in commercial horticulture, environmental stewardship and forestry as it relates to private woodland use. Position is housed in Gates County.

Minimum Experience/Education:

One of the following educational requirements: – A Bachelor’s degree with a cumulative grade point average of 2.5 overall or a 3.0 (based on a 4.0 scale) in the job related field. The minimum GPA requirement will be waived for NCCE Program Associates with a Bachelor’s degree. – A Bachelor’s degree and the completion of at least one-half of coursework in a Master’s degree curriculum with a cumulative grade point average 3.0 or higher with at least one of the degrees in the job related field, or – Completion of a Master’s degree with at least one of the degrees in the job related field. Also required: a personal automobile; computer literacy; strong oral and written communication skills; the ability to plan, implement, market, and evaluate educational programs; willingness to work as a team member and support a total Extension program; and the ability to handle multiple demands and set priorities. Personal Attributes: Successful performance of the duties encompassed in the County Extension Area Agent’s job requires that the individual possess habits of industry, a sense of responsibility, and a genuine appreciation for the worth of the individual. The employee must be adept in both oral and written communication. The County Extension Area Agent is eligible to become a member of the non-tenure track/special faculty at North Carolina State University. The County Extension Area Agent has primary responsibility for planning, executing, and evaluating that phase of county Extension programs within assigned areas of program responsibility. The County Extension Area Agent cooperates with colleagues in the North Carolina Cooperative Extension and county leaders in performing assigned responsibilities. The performance of assigned responsibilities is governed by the philosophy, objectives, policies, and procedures of the North Carolina Cooperative Extension.

Department Required Skills:

The agent in this position must have technical competence in both commercial horticulture and the delivery of educational programs.

A bachelor’s degree in horticulture or plant sciences or a related area is required.

Preferred Years Experience, Skills, Training, Education:

Excellent oral, written, presentation, and teaching skills are necessary.

Extension and/or other relevant experience is preferred.

A Master’s Degree is highly preferred.

Required License or Certification:

Valid driver’s license and reliable, personal transportation required. Valid North Carolina driver’s license is required within 60 days of hire and must be maintained.
