Colgate University is seeking an organized, and motivated person for a Manager of Learning and Technology Spaces position. This position provides the opportunity to evolve the design and functionality of Colgate’s many learning and event spaces.

The Classroom, Digital Media, and Events (CDME) team provides direct support to students, faculty, staff and alumni. Our expert team supports over 200 learning and event spaces on and off campus facilitating audio visual installations, maintenance, repair, technical event support, education and consultations. Our team is in the field, front facing representatives of Colgate University’s IT organization In this role you will work closely with other Classroom and Event Support Specialists and Engagement and Support team to support our students, staff, and faculty and work with the rest of the IT teams as escalations and projects require.

In collaboration with campus partners, this position is accountable for the successful operation of Colgate’s learning and event spaces across campus. This role will oversee the repair and installation of classroom equipment, working with colleagues, manufacturers, and vendors to ensure Colgate’s standards of practice are followed. This role will assess learning spaces frequently and develop recommendations to improve functionality that will help define the annual renewal cycle project. This role will work strategically, as a key contributor, with cross-functional teams in the design, support, planning, and delivery of academic technology.

This role will:
- Work strategically, as a key contributor, with cross-functional teams in the design, support, planning, and delivery of academic technology.
- Research, benchmark, evaluate, and provide recommendations regarding audio/visual technologies and learning space concepts that enhance operations and improve learning environments to promote the best possible learning experience.
- Provide insight and expertise in the execution of audio visual and learning space projects through the project management lifecycle.
- Design and develop infrastructure drawings, prepare AV Design documents and renderings, and schematics for AV Systems.
- Manage the deployment of audio visual equipment including but not limited to data projectors, TVs, control equipment, peripherals, audio gear and video production equipment. Manage the diagnosis and repair, and maintenance of learning spaces technology, as noted above.
- Manage the technical assignments and activities of a diverse team of student workers and cooperative work/study employees, and provide training and leadership to them as necessary. Design and develop how-to documentation, tutorials, and digital content to assist internal staff and end users to advise on the appropriate use of technology.
- Provide expert technical support for strategic installations including, but not limited to, campus webcams, digital signage and presentation wall technologies.
- Coordinate, collaborate, and consult with stakeholders (academic and non-academic) on the design of space and integration of audio/visual technology. Ensure that all designs are sustainable, usable, and meet end user goals.
- Assist colleagues with event support duties and become proficient in the operation of embedded AV systems in event spaces.
- Maintain general awareness of advances and current trends in technology. Research issues and resolutions to technical problems. Acquire and maintain technical knowledge through reading, self-paced training, computer-based training or video-based training, courses, seminars, and other methods as necessary.


System Management


Demonstrated capability to configure, modify, create and install control system and graphical user interface programs for learning space controllers, switchers and touch panels. Maintains programmatic skill set inline with Colgate’s requirements.


AV Equipment Maintenance


Demonstrated ability to diagnose and make basic repairs to a broad spectrum of audio and video equipment. Specifically, has the demonstrated ability to change projector lamps, repair cables, build connectors and install rack mounted components. A clear understanding of the installation techniques and requirements for audio and video signals.


Classroom Design


An understanding of classroom design fundamentals and principles. Ability to collaborate and contribute to discussions that support the successful integration of technologies in support of teaching and learning.


Assistive Technologies


Familiarity with standards based assistive technologies used in a classroom environment. Ability to integrate software and hardware to promote communication and performance delivery clarity in an event environment to support individuals with sensory deficits.


Training and Safety


Obtains/maintains all safety certifications required including those required for the use of ladders, lifts, and working in confined spaces. Maintains additional required trainings required to complete assigned work.


Project Management


The ability to understand and execute AV project plans. Familiarity with schematics, blueprints and AV symbols. Demonstrated experience managing and executing stakeholder requirements on a schedule. Demonstrated proficiency communicating details and subtleties to stakeholders and in return taking direction from Capital project managers


Computer Proficiency


Demonstrated experience and proficiency operating Windows and Mac laptops and desktop computers. Familiarity with iOS devices such as iPads and iPhones. Demonstrated proficiency in the use of Microsoft Office applications, such as PowerPoint and Word. Familiarity with video player applications such as VLC and QuickTime player.


AV Equipment Operation


Demonstrated ability to operate a broad spectrum of audio and video equipment. Proficient in the use and subtleties of document cameras, blu-ray players, multi-region playback devices, video cameras, audio recorders, wired and wireless microphones.


Customer Service


Displays empathy and patience with users of all levels of sophistication. Can successfully support most users on campus with tier 1 and tier 2 issues. Demonstrated ability to consistently follow through with solutions and information for all types of users. Demonstrated ability to diffuse the most challenging situations and remain calm and focused and escalate when required. Demonstrated ability to assess user sophistication and communicate (oral and written) with customers in an appropriate level of detail. Always conveys confidence to the user in ITS ability to solve issues. Demonstrated ability to appropriately broker services for calls received that do not relate to ITS.

Professional Experience/ Qualifications:

- Four years of experience with electrical technology, AV support or academic technologies.
- A combination of education and experience will be considered.
- Strong interpersonal and customer service skills and a high level of technical skill to classroom equipment performance monitoring, preventative maintenance, field repair, and stakeholder training.
- Extremely well-organized and detail-oriented.
- Highly proficient with computer applications (i.e Word, Excel, and Google Apps) and willingness to department specific software applications.
- Demonstrated ability to work inclusively with a diverse team and serve a diverse population.


A Bachelor’s Degree is required, preferably in Information Technology, Electronics, Telecommunications, Educational Technology or a related field.

A related degree, or equivalent additional professional experience in the activities listed in the Accountabilities section will also be considered.


A CTS Certification (AVIXA) is preferred.

Extron Control Specialist or Professional Certification, preferred.
