Summary

The Laboratory Safety Manager supervises Laboratory Safety Officers and EHS Specialists and manages health and safety compliance programs and activities at Tulane University pertaining to research laboratories and medical school anatomy lab and academic labs on all Tulane campuses in New Orleans, Belle Chasse, and Covington.Helps review, plan, and direct budget for the EHS Compliance Program.Develops and updates EHS programs, policies, and procedures.Acts as the IACUC liaison for OEHS.Manages the destruction of controlled substances.Schedules and directs all lab safety audits for the 850+ laboratory spaces spread out through Tulane campuses. Provides training and guidance on safety issues. Performs duties relative to animal care/research safety.Serves as a liaison for regulatory agencies, insurance companies, outside agency inspectors, etc. Participates in OEHS On-Call and Emergency Response Program.Assists other OEHS personnel in other areas and on other campuses as needed.This position is considered essential for certain campus emergencies and is expected to remain in campus allocated locations when called upon to do so.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree Chemistry or Biochemistry or related Science
  • 6-10 years of EHS experience with at least 3 years of experience managing laboratory safety programs including hazardous waste management and tracking.
  • Must have a valid and unrestricted (not including corrective lens needs) U.S. Driver's license and must meet the Tulane University Motor Vehicle policy criteria to become authorized as a driver.
  • Must be able to wear respiratory protection.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree from an accredited institution in chemistry, biochemistry, or related Science.
  • 1-3 years of experiencing directly supervising staff.
  • At least 1 year of experience working as a research assistant in a chemistry or chemical engineering research lab.
  • At least 3 years of experience reviewing and assessing risk of laboratory research process protocols including the review of procedures using biological agents, extremely hazardous chemicals, and controlled substances.
  • 15 years' work experience in environmental health and safety.
  • Five years' work experience in a university setting.
  • Professional certification or eligibility for CIH, CSP, CHMM, CHP, RS/REHS, or CCHO. Five years’ supervisory experience.
  • Three years' hazmat management experience within laboratory settings.
  • Current 40 HAZWOPER certification or ability to obtain the certification within 12 months.
