Primary Function of Organizational Unit:

Led by East Carolina University, the Coastal Studies Institute is a multi-institutional research and educational partnership of the UNC System including North Carolina State University, UNC Chapel Hill, UNC Wilmington and Elizabeth City State University. The Coastal Studies Institute, located on the ECU Outer Banks Campus, focuses on integrated coastal research and education programming centered around the needs, issues, and concerns of coastal North Carolinians by bringing together the interdisciplinary teams. Specific research expertise of CSI span a variety of coastal disciplines including coastal dynamics, ecology, biology, economics, environmental geography, social and behavioral sciences, and engineering. CSI uses an interdisciplinary approach and scientific advances to provide effective solutions to complex problems while helping coastal communities, ecosystems, and economies thrive.Coastal Studies Institute is a multi-university, collaborative institute dedicated to understanding and improving the coastal environment and it’s communities through integrative, location-based research, education and community engagement. The programs of the institute are as follows: Estuarine Ecology & Human Health; Coastal Engineering & Ocean Energy; Coastal Processes; Public Policy and Coastal Sustainability’ Maritime Heritage and Public Education and Outreach.

Job Duties :

Full Time Temporary Position located at the ECU/Outer Banks Campus (Wanchese, NC)
Research Support Technician to Operate and maintain assigned equipment and tools; performs inspections to ensure safe operating conditions; performs routine repairs and/or replacement of parts; cleans and performs preventative maintenance; and monitors need for replacement or advanced repairs. Prioritizes and responds to research requests and addresses issues or maintenance needs; reviews operational issues and/or parts requirements; performs troubleshooting of equipment issues. Ability to identify problems, determine possible solutions, and actively work to resolve the issues. Plans, monitors and reviews inventory, resources and materials needs; initiates orders for resources based on requirements; may work with contract workers and trade specialists by scheduling and coordinating repairs and maintenance services. Strict adherence to safety quality standards, good housekeeping habits, critical thinking/reading comprehension. Understand and perform preparation of research support equipment/vessels/vehicles before field work and assist in setting up preventive maintenance work and inspections. Maintains activity logs, records, request for vessels and related reports. Performs other duties of a similar nature and level as assigned.

Skill In: Following directions and meeting standards; Providing attention to detail in assignments; Performing routine inspections to ensure safe operating conditions; Monitoring and maintaining required supplies, materials, and inventory; Performing basic math calculations; Comprehending reference books and manuals; Operating assigned tools and equipment; Organizing and maintaining records and files; Utilizing a computer and relevant software applications; Communication and interpersonal skills as applied to interaction with coworkers, supervisors, the general public and others to sufficiently exchange or convey information and to receive work direction.

Minimum Education/Experience:

High school diploma or equivalency; or demonstrated possession of the competencies necessary to perform the work.

Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education:

USCG Captains license (6-pack or higher); experience working on and maintaining boats and watercraft; previous marina experience (trailering and driving boats and watercraft). Forklift certification.

License or Certification Required by the Department:

A valid NC Drivers License.
