This position is designated as ‘mandatory’ and, when contacted to report to work, its incumbent is expected to reach the campus as expeditiously as possible using normal precautions as dictated by the adverse weather conditions.

Primary Purpose of Position:

This position will serve to help provide uninterrupted continuous operations. The incumbent will primarily work as a member of the Maintenance Operations Department to be a direct liaison to support Maintenance Operations efforts to serve the research and critical facilities on campus. The Critical Facilities Coordinator will be a key member of the University’s Lab Council and be responsible for reporting, documenting, following up with, and resolving all concerns of campus research and critical facilities as directed. This position will serve as a key role, administrating, coordinating, and coordinating the efforts from different MO Shops and crews that affect the campus critical facilities. It will also serve as liaison with Academic Affairs Lab Managers to establish maintenance priorities and responsibilities, ensure the operational readiness, and assist with the implementation of maintenance contracts. Responsibilities will include scheduling and reporting on the annual operational checks of critical facility redundancy and resiliency of equipment fail overs and fail safes. This includes all infrastructure tests for mechanical, controls, electrical, and plumbing, and the CFA will directly coordinate efforts with the advanced level technicians from each of the associated shops.

Minimum Education/Experience:

Required Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree and one year of experience related to the area of assignment; or equivalent combination of training and experience. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.

University Preferred Qualifications:

Graduation from a four year college or university and at least four years of program associate experience, or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

Essential Job Duties:

1. Coordinate and review the implementation of maintenance contracts of equipment not currently maintained by Maintenance Operations (MO) that are applicable to research space utilities and equipment. This can include but is not limited to: ice machines, fume hoods, bio safety cabinets, -80 freezers, mini-split ductless HVAC services, environmentally controlled rooms, air compressors, air dryers, and vacuums, deionized-water, reverse osmosis-water, chemical treatment of hydronic loops, lab gases, etc.
2. Assist with the scheduling and reporting of predictive and preventative maintenance and perform equipment condition monitoring for all “critical systems”. This includes the formation of equipment route data collection, training, and databasing, as well as primary equipment serving the buildings from RUPs and the secondary and tertiary systems per building critical to maintaining the research environment and IAQ.
4. Define standards for the collection of data for service reports and predictive maintenance procedures.
3. Coordinate with all MO shops to verify O&M processes are completed and the results are documented and reported for the Lab Council.
4. Keep up to date with best laboratory practices, and be a subject matter expert for each area research is conducted at UNC Charlotte.
5. Maintain professional licenses and certifications relevant to the position.
6. Create a system inside the CMMS (ARCHIBUS) for reporting and record keeping for all O&M related to Critical Facilities.
7. Maintain constant customer interaction and develop relationships with all building liaisons and lab managers to coordinate all maintenance efforts.

Other Work Responsibilities:

  1. Mentor and lead other technicians to sustain and maintain critical facilities to reduce MO’s impact on research.
  2. Set standards for accuracy, validity and integrity; lead others in analysis.
  3. Respond to after-hours trouble calls for resolution via coming onsite to ensure problems are corrected for critical facilities as needed.
  4. Work directly with contractors and maintenance personnel to coordinate repairs, retrofits, upgrades or improvements to existing or new campus research areas.
  5. Perform work independently or in teams to accomplish daily tasks.
  6. Lift a minimum of 25 pounds and climb ladders as needed.
  7. Apply knowledge of OSHA/GHS/SDS/LOTO safety training to uphold on the job safety at all times.
  8. Perform other duties as assigned and/or delegated to support all RUPs, HVAC, and MEP Shops.

Departmental Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education:

1. Bachelor’s degree in Science in either an Engineering or a research-intensive field.
2. Working knowledge of electromechanical technology or instrumentation.
3. Work experience with research methods and laboratories including: BSL 2 & 3, Vivarium, Clean Rooms, Precision Metrology, Wet Labsand BSL2P.
4. Experience with the scheduling and reporting of predictive and preventative maintenance and performing equipment condition monitoring for all “critical systems”.
5. Ability to create reports and maintain records related to critical facilities.
6. Knowledge of OSHA/GHS/SDS/LOTO safety training.
7. Ability to effectively communicate the English language (reading, writing, interpretation and comprehension) required.
8. Effective skills in verbal, written and interpersonal communications.
9. Computer literate.
10. Knowledge and skill with Google Chrome, Microsoft Word and Excel, and willingness to learn new programs.
11. Ability to effectively work/interact with persons from different backgrounds and cultures.
12. Ability to foster and create an atmosphere of teamwork.
13. Selected candidate must have the mental and physical capabilities to perform the essential functions of the position with or without reasonable accommodations.

1. Position may be required to possess and maintain required certification, licensure, educational level, and/or experience criteria as applicable to the tasks being performed and follow applicable building codes. Certifications/licenses include:- National Institute of Health (NIH):
BSL 3 Operations and Management
BSL2P-American Board of Industrial Hygienists (ABIH):
ICIH / CAIH
