The University of Notre Dame (ND.jobs) is accepting applications for a HPC Administrator, User Support (3 year Limited Term).

This position focuses on supporting the High Performance Computing (HPC) environment under the direction of the Center for Research Computing (CRC). To support this environment, the HPC Administrator User Support assists junior and senior computational researchers to effectively leverage large-scale computing and storage infrastructure requiring expertise with Linux, multiple programming/scripting languages, grid-enabled middleware, common scientific applications, various architecture optimized compilers, efficient mathematical libraries/algorithms, and distributed/parallel file systems. This position utilizes a wide variety of skills in order to focus on HPC users' highly technical needs. It should be noted that this position might act as an administrator and do the work in the areas noted below or may act as a coordinator and enlist aid from department, college or peer institution colleagues in order to produce a world class HPC environment.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Support Ticket Resolution:The primary responsibility of this position is to provide technical support to users of our high performance computing resources. Issues are addressed through a combination of electronic mail, telephone, and in person meetings. Typical interactions include assessing obstacles to user access, managing and debugging complex job workflows, investigating system problems, and handling local or global application issues. Additionally, the candidate will be encouraged to update or enhance documentation for common resolutions.
Scientific software profiling, debugging and optimization: To ensure optimal and efficient usage of our resources, we will continually monitor systems for appropriate usage. When necessary, the candidate will meet with users to assist them in debugging, profiling and optimizing codes and workflows.
Teaching Undergraduate and New Graduate User Orientation Courses: The candidate will assist in weekly training of new users who come from both traditional and non-technical backgrounds. Occasionally, active participation in half to full-day workshops may be required. Ongoing maintenance of training materials as well as input and design on new methods of educating users is encouraged.
Other related as required: Responsibilities also include supporting other HPC staff, particularly as it relates to system performance, ongoing education of current practices and tools, as well as new technologies. Some non-standard work hours may be required on occasion.

This position is a 3 year limited term position with renewal possible.
US Citizenship required for Grant Funding.

Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree in STEM field with a computational focus. Computer Science/Engineering degree preferred.

Knowledge and experience of one or more of the following, and capability to develop skills in other areas: common software development languages and tools; software design and architecture; parallel programming (primarily with MPI); grid computing, programming frameworks; numerical methods and algorithms; software debugging, profiling and optimization in an HPC environment; scientific visualization; experience with a variety of HPC applications.

Excellent oral and written communication skills. The ability to pickup and learn general concepts and technologies quickly and independently.

Preferred Qualifications:
Good understanding of HPC environment including data visualization, distributed and parallel compilers and schedulers and optimizing and parallelizing compilers (C, C++). Good understanding of how scientists interact with the HPC environment both here at Notre Dame and at national supercomputing centers throughout the United States. A good working knowledge of distributed file systems is required. Red Hat experience a plus.
