Description:

The Computer Science System Administrator will oversee the development, administration, operation, and maintenance of the Computer Science department’s teaching and research computing facilities. The Computer Science System Administrator will facilitate collaboration with the Library and Information Technology Services department to ensure Computer Science technology needs are met, provide leadership and mentoring to students, and form relationships across the College to promote excellence in the department and its curriculum.

Maintaining Computer Science departmental infrastructure

  • Maintaining maximum uptime and operation of multiple UNIX servers to provide a stable environment that supports education and research for the department faculty and students
  • Ensure lab spaces and computing hardware is operational

Research, explore, and experiment with leading-edge hardware and software

  • Identify cutting edge technologies that can be implemented in to the department
  • Stay well-informed of software and hardware issues. Engage in professional development.
  • Make periodic recommendations for department initiatives.

Provide technical support for faculty and students

  • Support department research initiatives
  • Support student connectivity to the department infrastructure
  • Administer software installations
  • Explore alternative solutions to existing methodology to improve department virtual infrastructure

Respond to technical emergencies

  • Off-hours availability
  • Backup and restore files, file systems, and Virtual Appliances

Design and configure labs

  • Support configuration and modifications to current department spaces
  • Identify and coordinate department renovations
  • Work closely with LITS divisions to facilitate backend maintenance

Provide user documentation

Manage the department’s public identity

  • Maintenance of department web page
  • Maintenance of department social media accounts
  • Provide leadership and support for department events (programming contests, career fairs)

Support purchasing for department and faculty

  • Engage in professional development to maintain continual growth in Information Technology and Computer Science topics.

Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or related field, plus four years in professional computer experience, including Unix systems administration and programming.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

The Computer Science System Administrator should possess:

  • Proficiency in a modern high-level programming language;
  • Expertise with Unix Operating Systems (RHEL, CentOS). Knowledge of command line administration is strongly desired;
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team;
  • Knowledge of remote system administration technologies, include VPN and SSH;
  • Capable of working collegially with a diverse group of faculty, staff, and students;
  • Technical knowledge and experience with Windows and Mac Operating Systems;
  • Basic understanding of networking, system automation, and package management;
  • Advanced understanding of virtualization, configuration management, Windows deployment procedures, LDAP/AD integration, file sharing technologies;
  • Demonstrated organizational, collaborative, analytical, and communication skills;
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects concurrently;
  • Ability to embrace new technologies and trends to maintain the department infrastructure at the forefront of IT trends;
  • Off-hours support to respond to department incidents; and
  • General support for other departmental needs.
