The Department of Criminology and Criminal Justice invites applicants for the E. Desmond Lee Endowed Professorship in Youth Crime and Violence. The successful applicant for this position will also serve at least one three-year term as Department Chair, beginning in the summer of 2022. The person appointed to this post must have a national reputation for research and scholarship in youth crime, youth violence, or both. The successful applicant must currently be a tenured associate or full professor and conduct high-quality research into the causes and prevention of youth crime, youth violence, or both. In addition, they will participate in educating students and be actively involved in community engagement.

The professorship is part of the Des Lee Collaborative Vision, a community of thirty-five endowed professor across disciplines who collectively are dedicated to linking the knowledge and resources of universities with community partners through collaboration to build educational, cultural, and research opportunities for all members of the St. Louis community and around the world. The professor selected for the position in the Department of Criminology and Criminal Justice will participate in the Des Lee Collaborative Vision and connect with other endowed professors to extend and amplify UMSL’s impact within the greater St. Louis region and beyond.

The CCJ Department Chair serves in a position of strategic importance at UMSL, is accountable to the Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, and is responsible for the effective and efficient administration of the department. The Department Chair’s responsibilities include: developing the strategic vision and plans for the Department, consistent with those of the University; recruiting, retaining, developing, supervising, evaluating and leading faculty and staff; making budgetary decisions and resource allocations; assigning appropriate workloads; ensuring that excellence is achieved in all areas of the department; and serving as liaison for department faculty and staff with upper administration.

About the Department of Criminology and Criminal Justice
The mission of the Department of Criminology and Criminal Justice (CCJ) is to conduct and disseminate the findings of basic and applied research on crime and justice; to offer excellent teaching at the Bachelor, Master, and Doctoral levels; and to provide service to the campus, profession, and community. This mission is realized via the research, teaching, and service of the CCJ Department’s faculty, staff, and students. Given the importance of diverse perspectives to our work, the department is committed to fostering an environment that supports scholars with a variety of backgrounds and experiences.

Departmental faculty members publish the results of their research in top-tier, peer-reviewed journals and generate external funding from local, state, and national government agencies and private foundations. Teaching activities in the CCJ Department include not only traditional in-depth course work, but also intensive research training, especially at the PhD level. CCJ faculty members are actively involved in many local, state, national and international service activities, holding offices in organizations such as the American Society of Criminology and/or editorial positions on major criminological and sociological journals. Many faculty members also work closely with local agencies and non-profit organizations dedicated to building a stronger St. Louis.
