The East Carolina University Community School involves cross campus collaboration to provide the students a spectrum of support and services to comprehensively address their academic, social-emotional, physical, and family/community needs. The school will include one class per grade level for pre-kindergarten through 5th grade. The lab school involves an integrated partnership with Pitt County Schools and will be housed within a local elementary school.

As an educator within the East Carolina University School, the special educator will collaborate with general educators to cultivate a culture of innovation that supports effective instructional and positive behavior interventions and supports/practices/strategies to promote academic and personal success for all students (including those with disabilities) in the school. In particular, this includes providing or coordinating the provision of 1) special education and related services as identified on eligible students’ Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) and/or 504 Plans and 2) allowable accommodations and/or assistive technology throughout instruction and assessment. In addition, the special educator will be responsible for 1) developing and providing positive behavior and supports to all students, 2) collecting and analyzing student data used in IEP progress monitoring, 3) developing and maintaining records for collaborating in the IEP process, and 4) preparing documents for inclusion in Exceptional Children reports and plans developed by the ECU Community School Principal (or Exceptional Children’s Services Director). The special educator will also work collaboratively with others to facilitate and implement innovative instruction to achieve the mission of the school. The special educator will work collaboratively with the ECU Lab School Principal and university faculty/staff to support the successful social-emotional, physical, and academic development of the students within the community school.

Responsibilities:

1. Leadership
—The Teacher will demonstrate leadership to motivate effective learning practices and to strive for superior student performance so as to provide the best possible learning opportunities for the educational and personal growth by students with disabilities.
—The Teacher will facilitate the broad goals of the school and plan accordingly and collaboratively with other teachers, the ECU Lab School Principal, the University School liaison and ECU faculty members to ensure that procedures and schedules are implemented to carry out the total lab school program.
—The Teacher will cultivate self-determination leading to leadership in students and families.
—The Teacher will actively participate in professional development offered within the Lab School and beyond to demonstrate a willingness to grow as a professional educator.
—The Teacher will serve as an advocate for her/his students through implementation of innovative strategies and integration of a variety of support services such that each student’s social, emotional, physical and academic potential can be maximized.
2. Positive School Culture
—The Teacher will foster and engage in collaboration within the school and the broader community.
—The Teacher will participate within a “professional community” of educators who guide one another in improving instruction; such as developing and aligning curriculum, instructional practices, and assessments; problem solving; and participating in peer observations.
—The Teacher will create/foster an atmosphere that inspires innovation in the learning process such that the needs of diverse students are met.
—The Teacher will create/foster a culture that includes students and families such that they are involved and invested in the vision for the school and believe that their input is valued.
—The Teacher will build the capacity of students to develop a mindset of inquiry and exploration.
3. Content Knowledge
—The Teacher will demonstrate a strong grasp of elementary content (and strategies for expanding student access) through implementation of the ECU Lab School curriculum.
—The Teacher will seek to maximize the interconnectedness of curricular areas within her/his classroom to meet the needs of diverse learners.
—The Teacher will make instruction relevant to her/his students to build upon their cultural and life experiences.
4. Facilitation of Learning
—The Teacher will effectively assess students through a variety of methods to determine appropriate instructional strategies, assistive technology, instructional and assessment accommodations, and learning environments.
—The Teacher will collaborate with others within the ECU Lab School to implement the Lab School curriculum and achieve the mission of the school.
—The Teacher will facilitate innovative learning based on the needs of students through engaging in a variety of methods, strategies, learning environments, and student groupings.
—The Teacher will be mindful of the non-academic issues that impact student learning and seek to connect students and their families with appropriate services embedded within the Lab School’s integrated network of partners who will provide service and support.
—The Teacher will be receptive to hosting a variety of ECU faculty and students to assist with instruction.
—-The Teacher will be comfortable with technology.
5. Reflection on Practice
—The Teacher will analyze student learning collaboratively with other teachers, the Principal of the ECU Lab School, as well as ECU faculty.
—The Teacher will effectively adjust instruction based on analysis of student data such that the individual learning needs of students may be accommodated and met.
—The Teacher will successfully function within a unique school setting that will include the implementation of innovative and non-traditional learning/methods.
6. Cultural Competence
—The Teacher will acknowledge the importance of community to improve learning and achievement of all students by collaborating with colleagues, families and other community members.
—The Teacher will address the diverse interests and needs of students and their families, and utilize community resources to demonstrate and promote ethical standards of democracy, equity, diversity, and excellence.
—The Teacher will advocate for students and families to ensure equity and equitable access to opportunities to learn
7. Community Relations
—The Teacher will engage in and enhance meaningful collaboration and relationships amongst school and community stakeholders.
—The Teacher will facilitate developing a strong school community to foster increased student academic success.
—The Teacher will actively engage in ongoing communication with parents to ensure they are informed about their child’s progress within the school and to ensure families are aware of school resources available for their child and their family.
8. Research
—The Teacher will work collaboratively with university staff to ensure accessibility to students needed to conduct research.
—The Teacher will be receptive to visitors within her/his classroom for the purpose of instruction, assistance, research, and observation.
—The Teacher is comfortable with being observed, video-taped, and interviewed.

Contingent upon availability of funding.

Bachelor’s degree and an initial special education – general curriculum teaching license; excellent oral and written communication skills; and evidence of skill in working with at risk student populations. Qualifying degrees must be conferred and received from appropriately accredited institutions.

North Carolina license is required.

Preference will be given to candidates with a minimum of 3 years teaching experience and a Master’s degree.

Preference will be given to candidates with 1) teaching experience with diverse student groups, in particular, students with disabilities receiving instruction in the general education curriculum, 2) knowledge and skills in assistive technology, Universal Design for Learning, and Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports, and 3) documented experience collaborating with general educators to support learners with disabilities. Additional requirements would include the following: knowledge of public school and university partnerships; experience as a school-level mentor or clinical teacher.
