SUMMARY:

The Staff Psychologist/Staff Counselor provides mental health, consultation, crisis intervention, training and outreach services at CAPS. This position is also responsible for most of the case management services for CAPS clients, and will also helpcoordinate CAPS services for BIPOC students.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Direct Mental Health Services (50-60%): Provide some individual and group psychotherapy; a significant portion of direct services will be providing brief screening appointments for new clients, encouraging them to make use of appropriate resources on- or off-campus, and following up with these clients periodically; perform crisis intervention and crisis consultation for the campus, including rotating on-call duty during evenings and weekends; provide mental health assessment and evaluation services; make reasonable adjustments to scheduled appointments to meet requests for services; follow CAPS policies and procedures; adhere to appropriate ethical and professional standards.
  • Case Management (25-35%): Provide case management services for appropriate students (e.g. clients who were referred to a Stepped Care option outside the center, clients who are seeking care off-campus, clients who have been hospitalized, clients returning to campus following a withdrawal due to mental health reasons). Keep accurate and timely records of appointments (e.g., intake notes, progress notes, termination summaries) using the online Titanium record-keeping software; maintain confidentiality of records; consult with other professionals as needed to coordinate treatment; participate in CAPS peer supervision meetings; consult with parents and on- and off-campus professionals with appropriate authorization; inform supervisor as soon as possible of students who may be at serious risk. Take a leading role in coordinating CAPS services forBIPOC students. Develop, coordinate and deliver services grounded in culturalhumility and focused on culturally competent behavioral health care for BIPOCpopulations.
  • Consultation & Training (5%): Provide consultation, education, and outreach services to faculty, staff, students and parents on developmental, mental health, and harm-reduction/prevention issues; prepare and provide training seminars to university groups (e.g., residence life staff; academic advisors; first-year students)
  • Other Duties (5%): Attend CAPS staff meetings; cooperate with accountability and data collection systems; participate in University-wide and Division of Student Development programs; develop and maintain a network of effective working relationships with faculty and staff from other offices and departments; occasionally serve on search committees and other areas of university service; accept delegated responsibilities for special projects or committee assignments, as requested by the Director.   • Professional knowledge of suicide assessment, crisis assessment, crisis management and referral
  • Knowledge of multicultural issues
  • Demonstrated experience andclinical effectiveness in multicultural counseling approaches with ethnicallyand culturally diverse clients and communities
  • Knowledge of college student development issues
  • Ability to read & complete clinical notes and records in a timely fashion using the computerized Titanium record-keeping system
  • Ability to learn & use the computerized Titanium scheduling system for scheduling appointments, meetings and other activities
  • Ability to learn and use word-processing and spreadsheet software.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:

Staff Psychologist: Ph.D. or Psy.D. in Counseling, Clinical Psychology, or closely related field required

Staff Counselor: Master’s Degree in Counseling, Social Work, or a closely related field required

Licensed (or license-eligible) as a mental health professional in the State of Virginia

If not yet licensed in Virginia, obtain license within 2 years of date of hire

Maintain licensure through continuing professional education

Atleast 1 year experience providing mental health counseling services to youngadults (18-25 years old)
At least 1 yearexperience providing case management services for young adults (18-25 yearsold)

At least 1-year experience working in a college or university counseling center

Interest & experience providing triage and/or brief screening services

Demonstrated knowledge and sensitivity related to anti-racism, social justice, multicultural issues, and ability to interact effectively with diverse individuals and groups.

Preferred experiences include any of the following:

  • 1 or more years of experience working in a college or university counseling center
  • Interest & experience in case management
  • Interest & experience in brief therapy modalities
  • Interest & experience in DBT, ACT, or other treatment modalities not yet available at CAPS
  • Interest & experience working with underrepresented populations
  • Interest and experience in providing clinical supervision to graduate students in training from relevant mental health programs.

WORK HOURS:

  • Full-time, 10-month exempt position from August – May (off June and July)
  • Monday – Friday, 8:30 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.; 7.75 hrs./day; 38.75 hrs./week; flexibility on nights/weekends for programs and on-call rotation
  • Participate in occasional early morning or late evening or weekend events

SALARY STRUCTURE:
Pay Grade 7 or 8 depending upon qualifications and relevant title
