Summary and Scope of Position:

Campus Safety is a division of Student Affairs that provides safety, security, and parking and traffic services; enforces College policies and procedures and protects life and property within the College community. Campus Safety Officers (CSO) report to the Director of Campus Safety and are vital front-line Student Affairs Professional Staff. CSOs are non-sworn, unarmed employees tasked with providing a safe and secure environment for the Ursinus community and all its members. They act as first responders to all critical incidents on campus, begin the incident management process, and initiate appropriate emergency response procedures as needed.

 

CSOs respond to reports of crimes, suspicious activities, and other general calls for service and prepare detailed written reports of activities. They also conduct proactive patrol of College buildings, facilities, and property and work collaboratively with other College departments, as well as external emergency response agencies, in resolving incidents. CSOs interact with members of the Ursinus community in a professional and positive manner, employing effective community-service oriented techniques and tactics while providing a safe and secure environment for College community members to work, live, and pursue their academic goals and objectives.

 

This position requires the ability to work 1st, 2nd, and 3rd shifts, as well as weekends and holidays, and is expected to be available for occasional overtime. Training, both on campus in-service and off-site, is assigned as needed.

 

Specific Responsibilities:

  • Conducts proactive patrol of College buildings, facilities, property, and other assets by:  Foot, bicycle, or motor rounds of all campus areas (interior and exterior), or by stationing at fixed posts; ensuring hazards such as: suspicious activity, fire, flood, intruder, injury, safety code violations, maintenance issues, etc. are addressed, and/or documented, and College conduct policies and local/state/federal laws are being obeyed.
  • Protecting campus property by inspecting and checking security of doors, windows, and alarms, and securing campus buildings.  
  • Providing information, responding to questions, and giving guidance to members of and visitors to the campus; keeps abreast of departmental and College activities.
  • Wearing the assigned uniform so that they are a visible resource for those who may need assistance.
  • Responds to emergency incidents, including medical emergencies, fire alarms, burglary alarms, and suspicious activities; assumes control of the situation, begins the investigation process, and takes additional appropriate action, as necessary. 
  • Responds to all medical emergencies and administers first aid and CPR as trained if necessary; coordinates with local emergency dispatch and emergency personnel if needed.
  • Contacts appropriate College administrators and/or governmental agencies when necessary.
  • Leads the emergency evacuation of buildings or areas.
  • Provides assistance to local and state police, fire, and emergency medical responders, when necessary.
  • Responds to non-emergency calls for service, takes appropriate action, and submits an incident report if necessary; including, but not limited to:
      Student, faculty, staff, and visitor escorts.Vehicle assistance; including jump-starts and vehicle lock-out assistance.Maintenance issues, i.e. water leaks, heat malfunctions, broken windows, etc.Access/lockout requests.Regular and recurring facility and life safety equipment inspections and inventory.Non-emergency incident reporting, i.e. thefts, suspicious incidents, vandalism, etc.Conducts preliminary investigations of suspicious incidents and other general calls for service.Takes statements from individuals.Prepares clear, concise, and detailed incident reports to allow for appropriate follow up by Student Affairs staff.Collects and processes property and evidence following standardized procedures. Maintains confidentiality of information and records pertaining to investigations and college operations.Maintains confidentiality in reporting of Title IX incidents.Provides first-line support for survivors of sexual misconduct and begins the reporting process.  Has a familiarity with state and federal laws and regulations applicable to the CollegeEnforces campus parking regulations, and:Checks for valid vehicular parking permits.Issues citations as needed or directed.Alerts supervisors to traffic hazards or violations that could result in a vehicle being towed and/or booted.Processes vehicle registration permits.Prepares reports of enforcement activities.Staffs special event assignments, including athletic competitions, homecoming, and commencement activities.Maintains crowd control and provides instructions and directions to event attendees and staff.Provides parking and traffic control assistance
  • Works to further the strategic goals of Student Affairs and the College through thoughtful interactions with all members of the Community.
  • Employs effective community service-oriented techniques, ensuring positive and professional interactions are maintained with Ursinus College community members.
  • Communicates with students, staff, faculty, guests and other law enforcement officers under routine and stressful situations.
  • Works collaboratively with residence assistants (RA) and other College faculty, staff, and students during normal patrol; sharing crime prevention information and valuable safety and security techniques.

    Other Skills, Abilities and/or Training:

  • Attend/participate in in-service training and specialized training programs.
  • Participate in training newly hired officers.
  • Conduct, or assist in conducting, specialized training programs for the University community as assigned.
  • Attend annual Student Affairs Retreats (when scheduled in advance and not conflicting with work schedule).
  • Attend regular staff meetings.
  • Ability to use a variety of computer software programs including Microsoft Office products, computerized records management systems, and video surveillance equipment.
  • Dispatch and clerical duties as may be required.
  • Realizing that this position is one that is classified as “essential personnel” and you will be expected to respond if the need arises.
  • Assignments shall include weekends and holidays.
  • Ability to satisfactorily complete a training program prescribed by the Department within a six-month probationary period

  • Physical Demands:

  • Ability to demonstrate physical and psychological fitness
  • Physical stamina is required for prolonged standing, walking and patrols as related to job functions.
  • Lifts, carries, pushes, or pulls a variety of emergency equipment and/or materials, including fire extinguishers, and other emergency response equipment as needed.
  • Works outside in all weather conditions and under possible hazardous conditions.
  • Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree preferred
  • Valid Pennsylvania Driver's License
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Understanding of higher education setting and ability to work with persons of diverse cultures and backgrounds. 
  • Previous experience in campus safety preferred
