The Department of Emergency Medicine at the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania seeks candidates for several Assistant Professor positions in the non-tenure clinician educator track. Expertise is required in the specific area of Expertise in emergency medicine is required. Applicants must have an M.D. degree. ABEM certified or board eligible.

Teaching responsibilities may include demonstrated enthusiasm for the bedside clinical teaching of emergency medicine residents, students and off-service trainees. Additional teaching responsibilities include lectures, journal clubs, case conferences, simulation teaching, small group discussions, and other formats. Dedication to teaching is highly valued in our department.

Clinical responsibilities may include providing outstanding clinical care to emergency department patients in one or more of our three city hospitals: Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, Penn Presbyterian Medical Center, and Pennsylvania Hospital. Patients seen in our EDs include high acuity, complex patients, as well as patients with less acute illnesses and injuries. Penn Presbyterian Medical Center is a Level 1 Trauma Center. Superior clinical judgement, professionalism, evidence-based practice knowledge, compassion, and teamwork are some of the many competencies that are highly valued in our clinical faculty.

Research or scholarship responsibilities may include independent research, which is a key component for success in this position and there is a mandatory probationary period for promotion review that requires significant scholarship. Candidates with post-residency research methodology training or fellowship training may have an advantage in meeting the requirements of this track. A reduced clinical schedule is initially available for this position with the expectation that after an introductory period, there will be independent funding to support the clinical reduction. Mentoring is provided and teamwork is encouraged and valued. There are many opportunities to work across departments and schools (there are 6 STEM schools on campus) on multidisciplinary projects.

The Department of Emergency Medicine manages emergency services at three sites (HUP; Penn-Presbyterian Medical Center-PPMC; and Pennsylvania Hospital-PAH) with a combined annual emergency department census of 145,000 visits. Each site has a unique, diverse, highly acute patient population consisting of local and referral patients. Additionally, the Department collaborates with the Emergency Departments at Lancaster General Hospital, Chester County Hospital and Princeton Medical Center.

Emergency Medicine has a 4 year, highly successful, academically oriented residency program with 46 residents, multiple fellowships, and several nationally acclaimed research programs housed within its Center for Resuscitation Science and the Center for Emergency Care Policy Research. There are over 80 faculty across the three primary academic sites and there are close academic affiliations and programmatic alliances with the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia and the Philadelphia Veterans Affairs Medical Center. The Department has active collaborations with other University of Pennsylvania Centers and schools such as the Penn Medicine Center for Healthcare Innovation, Wharton Business School, Leonard Davis Institute for Health Care Economics, and the Center for Clinical Epidemiology and Biostatistics among others.
