The Department of Clinical Sciences and Advanced Medicine, School of Veterinary Medicine, University of Pennsylvania is seeking applications for a lecturer position in small animal dentistry and oral surgery. The position is ideally suited for recent graduates of a dentistry and oral surgery residency program or for others seeking to transition into an academic career. The successful candidate will spend 80% (42 weeks) of the academic year providing clinical service in the small animal hospital. The lectureship will be a one-year, potentially renewable appointment. The start date is negotiable.
The position primarily involves clinical service and teaching in a busy university teaching hospital. Clinical service responsibilities will include the provision of patient care and supervision of day-to-day operations of the Dentistry and Oral Surgery Service. Teaching responsibilities will include small group and didactic instruction of veterinary students rotating through the service and mentoring of dentistry and oral surgery residents. In addition to student rounds and separate clinician rounds, the Dentistry and Oral Surgery Service holds resident rounds, journal clubs, board review lectures, and laboratories. The different sections of the hospital offer additional academic rounds. The proximity of the veterinary school to Penn's dental and medical schools fosters numerous collaborative research and clinical endeavors. Opportunity exists to participate in collaborative research projects within and outside the veterinary school. The Dentistry and Oral Surgery Service employs two (AVDC) board-certified specialists in support of the program. There are currently three residents enrolled in the residency training program. More than 30 Diplomates of multiple American and European certifying colleges, who are leaders in their fields, support the Dentistry and Oral Surgery Service. The hospital is a dynamic and intellectually stimulating environment with excellent nursing staff and residents. The school is located amid a vibrant urban neighborhood that offers an abundance of cultural resources including music, art, theatres, and fine dining (www.upenn.edu/life-at-penn/philadelphia).
