Description:

The Coordinator of International Students and Scholars is responsible for compliance with Federal Rules and Regulations regarding F-1 students, F-2 dependents, J-1 students, J-1 scholars, J-1 professors, J-1 interns, and J-2 dependents through the SEVIS system. This role is also responsible for the required SEVIS reporting, issuance of I-20s, DS-2019s, event reports, annual reports, the administration of the F program and J Exchange Visitor programs, and general advising for F-1 students, J-1 students and scholars. This position will also counsel TAMU-CC departments, colleges, and schools on determining foreign nationals? eligibility for appropriate immigration and non-immigration categories, employment and training, etc. Act as interface with a variety of federal agencies, i.e. Citizenship and Immigration Services, Immigration and Customs Enforcement, Customs and Border Protection, and U.S. Department of State to ensure compliance with all U.S. Immigration Laws, Federal Rules and Regulations. This position will have responsibilities for developing and implementing support programs and services, which will involve comprehensive international student and scholar orientation, international day or week, employment fair, assistance with tax workshops and compliance workshops, field trips, advising international student clubs, and many other cultural activities and social events.

Responsibilities:
  • Advise international students and scholars on matters related to non-immigration status that includes Optional Practical Training (OPT), Curriculum Practical Training (CPT), program extensions, changes of status, transfer-in and out, reduced course load, reinstatement, maintaining status, travel, and different kinds of reports in SEVIS and university data systems. Assist TAMU-CC departments, colleges, and schools with any situations that require problem solving. Advise F-1 students, J-1 students and scholars on insurance for health, repatriation, and evacuation which may impact foreign nationals? legal immigration status. Help F-1 and J-1 students and scholars adjust to their life at TAMU-CC including applications for social security numbers, Texas Driver's licenses, and employment authorization documents for J-2 dependents, etc.
  • Process all F-1 and J-1 reports including annual reports, SEVIS registration and enrollment reports, statistical reports, RTI OPT reports, no-show reports, change of address reports, event reports, 6-month and 24 month STEM OPT reports, etc. and work with TAMU-CC departments, colleges, and schools to find appropriate resources and approaches to resolve issues when they arise.
  • Maintain expert knowledge of Federal Rules and Regulations related to F and J classifications. Advise, process, and manage all requests from TAMU-CC departments, students, and faculty regarding F and J categories. Keep track of the new Rules and Regulations regarding F-1 and J-1 students and scholars. Manage regulatory changes and update the OIE forms, handbook, website, documentation, policy and procedures to ensure the continuing compliance with federal requirements.
  • Process the documents for F-1 internship and occasional lectures or short-term consultations participated by J professors and research scholars in terms of the F-1 and J-1 exchange visitor rules and TAMU-CC policy.
  • Conduct workshops on OPT, CPT, AT, STEM OPT, and other necessary topics for F-1 and J-1 international students and scholars under the direction of the OIE Director.
  • Conduct new international student and scholar orientations. Support the development and implementation of retention strategies such as educational, cultural, and social events/activities. Participate in the coordination of activities such as international day or week, field trips, study abroad fairs, etc. for both domestic and international students and scholars, including the creation of programming instructions, advertisement, and handbooks.
  • Assist with hiring, training, evaluating, and supervision of student employees.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.


Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree.
  • Two (2) years of experience to include one year professional experience in higher education working with international students and scholars in J and F status.
  • Professional knowledge of Federal Rules and Regulations on J and F classifications with hands-on experience in SEVIS, proven ability to effectively communicate these regulations with students, faculty, staff, and administrators.
  • Strong analytical and organizational skills with the ability to work well under pressure with confidential materials while also effectively handling multiple jobs.
  • Detail oriented and demonstrated ability to multi-task in a fast-paced environment.
  • Intermediate skills with Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), databases, spreadsheets, etc.
  • Excellent listening, written and verbal communication skills to be able to work as a team member, work with students, and to work independently.
  • Ability to establish and maintain a strong team while working in a collaborative environment with both internal and external university departments.
  • Demonstrate commitment to working with international students, scholars, and an awareness of common issues and problems affecting them.


Preferred Qualifications:
  • Master's degree.
  • Experience in communicating with SEVIS help desk.
  • Experience with development and implementation of support programs and services.
  • Experience working or studying outside U.S.A.
  • Experience in managing and maintaining websites.
  • Ability to work with diverse populations.
  • Experience with Banner, Argos, and Degree Works.
