SUMMARY:

Under general supervision, the Assistant Director, Community-Engaged Learning helps to develop and implement the Center’s strategy for supporting community-engaged learning with an emphasis on amplifying the voices and meeting the needs of students participating in curricular community engagement across campus, in alignment with the Center’s mission.

The Assistant Director develops and implements a range of initiatives and activities to support students and faculty in effective high-impact, course-based civic engagement experiences. The assistant director operates with significant independence and with a high campus profile, serving as primary point of contact for and collaborating with University faculty, students, and peer staff in academic affairs and student development in order to identify and develop high-quality and mutually beneficial educational opportunities. Provides professional and programmatic guidance, consultation, and support to constituencies as appropriate.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Lead and oversee CCE’s signature community-based learning course support grant program, responsible for coordination of complex ecosystem of supports for implementation of high-impact experiential learning opportunities. Specific responsibilities include: promoting and evaluating the course grant program, including collecting and archiving course materials; collaborating with faculty members as needed to implement grants; developing and facilitating educational activities and lectures that support community-based learning faculty and students; serving as lead community-based learning class liaison to the Volunteer Management System (SpidersEngage) team; overseeing coordination of transportation for CBL classes; and serving as a principal liaison between students, faculty, staff, other departments, and/or external constituencies on resolving day-to-day programmatic, operational, and administrative issues related to community-based learning. This may include managing logistics of community partner relationships in order to place students fulfilling community-based learning requirements.
  • Develop and lead tracking and evaluation efforts associated with faculty engagement and community-based learning classes. Responsibilities to include developing and implementing systems for collecting, documenting, and facilitating analysis of data related to CBL and faculty engagement, including tracking CBL classes and course support grants; designing and implementing generative evaluation of student and faculty experiences related to community-based learning and faculty engagement; and preparing scheduled and special reports for a variety of audiences.
  • Plan, develop, and facilitate offerings and programs that serve faculty and students and that further community-engaged curricular learning and other academically grounded faculty-student collaborations. Responsibilities to include CCE’s signature Brown Bag discussion series and One Book, One Richmond.
  • Increase the visibility of community-based learning for all constituents via the University’s storytelling platforms as CEL lead for the communications team. Responsibilities include: creating and maintaining new and existing content on the CCE website; leading CBL and faculty-related social media content strategy and creation; writing and editing faculty newsletter and communications to faculty list; and executing various other communications strategies and projects in collaboration with internal and external partners, which may include annual report planning and promotional videos.
  • Provide and/or coordinate comprehensive advising and related support to student participants in CBL classes and other specialized, academically grounded community engagement initiatives; identify synergies between CBL student support and ongoing work of the Student Engagement team, initiating and supporting new projects between the two teams.
  • Oversee administration of CBL budgets, in coordination with CCE Operations Coordinator; participate in the development of funding proposals for the program.
  • May supervise and train student employees, as appropriate.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Knowledge of civic engagement and community-based learning theories, research and practices.
  • Knowledge of college student development
  • Knowledge of assessment and evaluation and ability to gather and analyze data and generate reports.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community.
  • Ability to effectively collaborate with others.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience required
  • 3 years plus of higher education experience preferred

WORK HOURS:

  • Full-time, exempt position
  • Monday – Friday, 8:30 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.; 7.75 hrs./day; 38.75 hrs./week
  • Occasional evening obligations

SALARY STRUCTURE:
Pay Grade 6 (Hiring Range $44,775.00 to $59,325.00 annually)
