Merced College is a midsized community college located in California's Central Valley. Founded in 1962, the college serves more than 16,000 students, with room to expand on its 267-acre main campus and 120-acre Los Banos site, as well as at our innovative Business Resource Center in Downtown Merced. The Maintenance Mechanic functions as a team member of our Maintenance Department. This position provides important services for our staff, students, and members of the community. Our Maintenance department is tasked with performing ongoing facility maintenance and completing repairs on equipment. They are responsible for keeping a facility operating and repairing any problems when they are discovered before they have a chance to worsen.     General Description:
    Under direction, performs a variety of skilled activities related to installation, modification, maintenance and repair of buildings and equipment; and to do related work as required.

    Examples of Duties
    Essential Functions:
  • Performs general and skilled maintenance work in mechanical and building trades
  • Repairs, installs and adjusts door closures
  • Services and repairs locksets and cuts keys
  • Initiates and participates in preventative maintenance of equipment
  • Participates in emergency repair, including electrical systems, cables, power circuits, gas leaks, generators and control equipment
  • Performs first level preventative maintenance and adjustment of heating, ventilation and air conditioning equipment
  • Assists in filter changes
  • Assists in removal and replacement of major air conditioning and ventilation systems
  • Assists in wiring of new or altered buildings
  • Maintains electrical lighting, repairs and replaces water and gas pipes, valves, fittings and other fixtures, packs faucets and related plumbing and cleans out drains in water and sewer systems
  • Cleans and repairs roofs, drains and gutters
  • Maintains equipment in clean and orderly condition
  • Assists in painting as necessary
  • Participates in the installation of new plumbing
  • Performs other related duties as assigned

  • Knowledge of:
  • Standard practices and procedures of the building trades including materials and tools
  • Applicable code requirements

  • Ability to:
  • Perform general maintenance work, including all lock repair and maintenance
  • Use and care for tools and equipment
  • Work from plans and specifications
  • Follow oral and written directions
  • Work cooperatively with others
  • Demonstrate sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students


  • Typical Qualifications
    Required:
  • High school diploma OR GED AND
  • Three (3) years applicable experience OR
  • Associate's degree OR
  • The equivalent education and experience

  • License or Certificate:
  • Possession of a valid California driver's license

    Environment:
    Work is performed in an indoor and outdoor work environment with regular exposure to fumes, dust, and odors. There may be travel to different sites and incumbents may be required to work extended hours including evenings and weekends.

    Interview Information:
    Those applicants deemed highly qualified for the position will be invited to appear for oral interviews before a screening committee. A limited number of candidates will be invited to interviews.     Employee Benefits:
    Permanent part-time employees receive paid holidays as well as prorated vacation and sick leave. While permanent part-time employees are not eligible for health/vision/dental care coverage or group life insurance, the District does offer an optional supplemental benefits suite.
