Department Description:

The College of Arts & Sciences consists of seventy-one academic departments, curricula, programs, centers, and institutes. The College of Arts & Sciences is administered by the Dean of the College, Terry Rhodes, Professor in the Department of Music, and is divided into four divisions, which are overseen by four Senior Associate Deans. All academic departments and curricula are assigned to one of the following four divisions—Fine Arts and Humanities, Natural Sciences and Mathematics, Social Sciences and Global Programs and Undergraduate Education. These Senior Associate Deans, along with the Senior Associate Dean for Operations & Strategy, Senior Associate Dean for Development, Associate Dean for Diversity, Equity and Inclusion, Associate Dean for Research & Innovation, and the Director of Communications for the College, all report to the Dean. The Office of the Dean is responsible for the administration and operations of the College under the Office of the Provost.
During its 200+ year history, the College has grown and thrived and is now numbering more than 1,000 faculty teaching over 17,000 undergraduate and 2,400 graduate students. College programming resides in 76 buildings, many of them within the historic heart of the campus, covering 1.5 million assignable square feet. Our faculty includes distinguished scholars, artists, scientists, and performers with international reputations. All are teachers as well as leaders in their fields of intellectual and artistic endeavor. Eighty-one percent of upper-class students choose a major in the College. Eighty-seven percent of the credit hours are taught in the College and there are around fifty different undergraduate degrees offered. Bachelor of Arts (BA), Bachelor of Arts with a Major in Interdisciplinary Studies, Bachelor of Science (B.S.), Bachelor of Fine Arts (B.FA), and Bachelor of Music (B.M.) degrees are offered. Many of these academic programs also allow students to minor at the Bachelor’s level as well. Nearly all of the departments and curricula also offer masters and doctoral degrees through the Graduate School.

Position Description:

The Director of Facilities Shared Services will report to the Senior Associate Dean of Operations & Strategy and will be responsible for oversight, planning and strategy for the facilities that house the College of Arts & Sciences departments, centers, and programs. This oversight includes primarily building operations and effective use of space including space-planning studies. The Director will be the College liaison between departments and Facilities Services for College capital and renovation projects, may assist in contract negotiation, and also College sustainability efforts. The incumbent will coordinate closely with University representatives in all duty categories (University’s Division of Finance & Operations: Property & Leasing, Facilities Services, Environment, Health & Safety, and the Sustainability Office). The Director of Facilities Shared Services will supervise position(s) within the Facility Shared Services and will conceptualize and implement a shared facility management structure within the College, drawing upon staff and expertise currently held within departments.

The Director will work with a wide range of user groups and committees across academic departments, centers, programs and represent the College’s interests and strategic vision in the development of short- and long-term facilities and space plans.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:

Bachelor’s degree in institutional planning, public administration, engineering, architecture, business administration, economics, industrial technology or a related discipline and two years of facility and space planning experience; or equivalent combination of training and experience. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.

Essential Skills, Knowledge and Abilities:

At least two years of facility and space planning experience. Prior supervisory experience in coordinating capital and/or renovation improvement projects. Effective written, verbal and interpersonal communication skills. Demonstrated ability to manage relationships with internal and external partners in a collegial manner. Demonstrate organizational ability to work on multiple projects with competing deadlines and to establish goals and workload priorities. Thorough knowledge of budgets and planning. Prior experience effectively organizing, prioritizing and handling multiple tasks to meet established deadlines. Ability to understand and be sensitive to a diverse academic environment (e.g. socio-economically, culturally, ethnically and in terms of disabilities). Demonstrated interaction and management with all levels of management, faculty, staff and students.

Preferred Qualifications:

Prior experience within the UNC system.

Special Physical and Mental Requirements:

Physical effort may be required for the position which includes, but not limited to: moving equipment/furniture of up to 50 lbs. independently; using hand trucks or general material handling equipment if required; and wearing required PPE (personal protective equipment) for the specific job, as applicable.

Location: UNC is located in the heart of Chapel Hill, the best college town in America! It's a friendly town of about 40,000 in the geographical center of North Carolina.
