Organizational Unit Overview:

Information Technology and Computing Services (ITCS) is the central agency that supports enterprise-wide computing at East Carolina University. ITCS, through innovative information technology initiatives and service, provides opportunities for the ECU community to excel in teaching, research, and service using state-of-the-market technology and collaborative environments. ITCS is first and foremost committed to providing excellent information technology support for faculty, staff, and students. ITCS partners with campus departments, other universities, and industry to make strategic investments in information technology infrastructure that will help maintain a competitive advantage in administrative applications, faculty research, and outreach to the state and nation. We will achieve this through increasing the core functions and deploying appropriate technology throughout the university. The primary mission of the Enterprise Linux Systems team is to ensure secure, highly available and robust Linux based computing platforms. The broader Systems team installs, configures, and maintains various server hardware including blade servers, virtual servers (VMware, OpenStack), and rack mount servers. The team is responsible for OS administration and support of Windows, Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL), SUSE, OEL, VMware ESX, and Red Hat OpenStack. The team also supports the University’s Virtual and Blade Infrastructure.

Job Duties :

The primary purpose of the position is to provide Systems Administration and 24×7 support of the supported Enterprise Linux Systems. The primary focus is systems administration and support of Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) servers and other platform technologies including OpenStack, Red Hat Satellite, Red Hat Capsule and Cloud-Centric Technologies supported by the team. The position will apply specialized platform technical expertise in troubleshooting performance issues, system failures, security events, etc. The position will maintain overall system security, upgrade software, perform capacity planning, tune systems performance parameters, perform project management, develop, and test disaster recovery plans. This position will help to champion platform technologies to drive efficiencies and positive business outcomes. IT Automation is vital to the team. This position will drive systems level automation for provisioning and configuration enforcement with use of OpenStack Heat Templates, Ansible playbooks, Puppet modules, git repositories, Jenkins pipelines, Kickstart templates, cloud images, shell scripts, python scripts, and many other cloud-native technologies.

The work is highly analytical, and this position will function in an advance technical capacity for the day-to-day systems administration and platform support. The employee in this position is a highly skilled technical resource that assists junior level team members with problem resolution and analysis. This position will mentor staff to facilitate their technical development.

Duties include on-call responsibilities during non-business hours including evenings and weekends to respond to technical support issues. Employees are required to adjust their standard work schedule to meet the requirements of their position, which includes and not limited to evening and weekend hours to perform scheduled and unscheduled workload requirements to maintain University operations.

Minimum Education/Experience :

Master’s degree and 2-4 years’ experience; or a bachelor’s degree and 3-5 years’ experience: or an equivalent combination of education and experience. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.

License or Certification Required by Statute or Regulation :


Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education :

A technology-related degree with an emphasis on systems security is preferred. Certification in Red Hat Certified System Administrator (RHCSA) and/or Red Hat Certified Engineer (RHCE) and/or applicable certifications is highly desired.
Five years of experience working in a fast paced, DevOps, team oriented, enterprise level, cloud-centric environment designing and managing information systems, related hardware/software, and associated business processes focused to push the organization forward is preferred. Experience with innovating and championing new technologies within a team environment. Highly skilled in oral and written communications with the ability to work as an independent, productive, responsible, self-motivated member of a team in high-pressure situations is preferred. Excellent interpersonal, negotiation, organizational, planning, and strong problem-solving skills, while demonstrating ability to work effectively with employees at all organizational levels to prioritize, utilize, and meet project deadlines efficiently and effectively is desired. Experience with cloud-native technologies such as OpenStack, GCE, AWS, Azure, or similar private, public, or hybrid cloud platform. Experience using IT Automation and cloud-centric tools such as OpenStack Heat Templates, git, Jenkins, Ansible playbooks, Puppet modules, Kickstart templates, Python scripts, cloud images, continuous integration, and continuous development/deployment. In depth knowledge provisioning, troubleshooting, and supporting Red Hat Enterprise Linux or other Linux variants while using Kickstart templates, PXE boot, yum repositories, RPMs, shell scripts, Perl scripts, IT Automation tools and high-level programming languages such as Python is preferred. Experience in building, deploying, troubleshooting, and supporting highly available x86 platforms using enterprise clustering such as Red Hat Enterprise Linux Cluster, Bright Computing Cluster Manager, Oracle Cluster ware, HA Proxy, HA LVM, Gluster Storage, or CEPH Storage. A strong background and/or understanding of disaster recovery and system development life cycles is preferred.
