The Office of Communications is seeking a talented, self-motivated, full-stack web applications developer who wants to contribute to the College’s rapid growth and communication goals by delivering high quality, engaging, and innovative web experiences. This role, reporting to the web operations manager, will collaborate closely with a talented team of creative professionals in the Office of Communications including designers, content producers, managers, brand specialists, as well as community partners, such as the Office of Information Technology Services (ITS) and Academic Information Technology Services (AITS), to build and maintain high-quality web products of strategic importance to the College.

The ideal candidate will have expertise in all aspects of web development and the web application development lifecycle, including server configuration, database design, frontend and backend development, CI/CD, and unit/integration testing. Although Colby is a WordPress campus, the successful candidate should be knowledgeable of popular and emergent technologies and frameworks, such as Gatsby/Next, React/Vue, Twig, TailwindCSS, Laravel and adept at employing these technologies as a means to solve unique problems.

Daily tasks include building web applications according to brand and development standards, quality assurance testing, and on-going maintenance of existing sites and systems. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Build and maintain software for the Office of Communications and campus-wide projects
  • Manage workflow and delivery of a user-oriented experience of the College’s digital resources
  • Gather requirements, write code, and support the use of web applications
  • Maintain project deadlines and track progress
  • Develop procedures for testing and debugging code; track and resolve bugs as they arise
  • Adhere to comprehensive brand, accessibility, and coding standards
  • Optimize code for scalability, security, and speed
  • Deliver responsive web pages to work on any device
  • Timely communication with colleagues and end users regarding ongoing projects
  • Contribute to library of reusable plugins, themes, and front-end components
  • Provide thorough developer and user documentation for all features built
  • Work with outside APIs to integrate 3rd party services with Colby’s web ecosystem
  • Convert legacy software to use standardized development paradigms as necessary
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of emerging web development technologies and apply them where appropriate
  • Perform additional duties as assigned; duties, responsibilities, and activities may change at any time with or without notice

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s degree or the equivalent in education and experience
  • 3-5 years of experience in developing websites and web-based solutions; freelance work and/or interaction with clients a plus
  • Expertise in WordPress 5 patterns and technologies, such as Gutenberg blocks, themes, plugins, WP API, WP CLI, etc.
  • Fluent in HTML5, CSS3, PHP, vanilla JS, and JSON
  • Understanding of relational databases (MYSQL, MariaDB) and database design
  • Experience creating APIs and ingesting API data
  • Working knowledge of popular technologies outside of WordPress, including, but not all:
    • Backend: Drupal, Laravel, Symphony, Yii
    • Frontend: React, Vue, TailwindCSS, Gatsby, Next.js, Nuxt.js
    • Data: GraphQL, Redis, ORM
  • Experience with git or similar version control systems
  • Strong analytical, problem solving, and creative thinking skills
  • Experience working with CDNs, especially Cloudflare preferred
  • Familiarity with scripting, automated testing, and CI/CD pipelines preferred
  • Excellent written, verbal, communication and interpersonal skills with a high level of motivation
  • Talent to establish and maintain effective working relations, communicate effectively about web technologies to clients and colleagues of all knowledge levels, and work with a culturally diverse population
  • Ability to handle multiple projects with differing deadlines at the same time
  • Proven ability to work autonomously, swiftly, and effectively on multiple projects; ability to take direction when needed
  • Demonstrate a high level of professionalism, an extraordinary degree of self-motivation
  • Highly organized, attentive to detail, and committed to the office and the College
  • Confidence to exercise judgement while working independently, as well as collaborate effectively with a team
  • Ability to work occasional nights/weekends
  • Experience working in a cloud-hosting PaaS, such as Platform.sh or Heroku a plus
  • Familiarity with build systems, such as Webpack or Laravel Mix a plus

This position has significant interactions with students, faculty, and staff.

WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

General open office and campus environment. Position involves sitting, although frequent movement is necessary. Computer usage involving repetitive hand/wrist motion is also necessary.
