Summary:
We seek a well-trained and skilled laboratory technician to prepare the laboratory portion of Environmental Science and Geology courses. The successful applicant will also assist faculty with maintenance of teaching instrumentation and provide support for the educational mission of both departments. Finally, the successful applicant will serve as chemical hygiene officer for the School of Earth and Environment.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Assist with laboratory preparation in a wide range of environmental and earth science subjects including but not limited to marine science, atmospheric science, ecosystem function, environmental monitoring, environmental chemistry, and geology.
- Manage orders for supplies related to teaching.
- Maintain departmental teaching microscopes.
- Maintain geological teaching collections.
- Maintain, calibrate, clean, and inventory field gear.
- Maintain MSDS files and lab personnel training files for faculty and staff; manage chemical waste storage and disposal, perform regular eyewash, safety shower checks, PPE inventory and cleaning, etc.
- Maintain department protocols for laboratory exercises and reagents.
- Prepare chemical reagents and standards for laboratory experiments and teaching instrumentation.
- Work closely with the departmental faculty and staff to determine lab and chemical safety requirements for laboratory experiments and implement the chemical hygiene plan. Upon certification, serve as school chemical hygiene officer.
- Work closely with faculty to determine lab and chemical safety requirements for laboratory experiments and research protocols.
- Support instrumentation used for teaching, including regular maintenance.
- Monitor compressed gas and ultrapure water system.
- Organize and maintain shared laboratory materials and system, including cleaning, inventory of consumables, calibration, etc.
- Train users on day-to-day use of equipment and maintain sign-up sheets.
- Supervise or train any student workers/learning/teaching assistants assigned to the laboratory courses.
Education Requirement:
- Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor's degree in environmental science, geology, or related field.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Ability to prepare and organize laboratory and demonstration materials
- Strong ability to set priorities on an initiative
- Ability to work in a team environment
- Strong computer skills to support duties associated with laboratory safety, ordering supplies, etc.
- Excellent communication skills
- Ability to adapt to change
- MS in environmental science, geology, or related field with a strong background in general or applied chemistry is preferred
- Experience in field research in either environmental science or geology
- Familiarity with the geology and environments of New Jersey
Salary:
- Range P16 (Step 1 = $44,628)

Rowan University, located a half-hour outside of Philadelphia with its main campus in suburban Glassboro, N.J., is an institution on the move.
This summer, the University opened Cooper Medical School of Rowan University (CMSRU) in partnership with Cooper University Health Care, in Camden. The first new four-year, M.D.-granting medical school in New Jersey in more than 35 years, CMSRU welcomed its first class in August 2012.
Rowan continues to work with the Borough of Glassboro and private developers on Rowan Boulevard, a $300 million redevelopment project that links the University’s main campus to the historic downtown. This fall alone, the partners broke ground for a new academic building/parking garage and a Marriott Courtyard Hotel. Rowan Boulevard already includes a Barnes & Noble Collegiate Superstore, housing for approximately 1,300 students and retail space.
The University also recently created a School of Biomedical Sciences, which joins nine colleges. In addition to CMSRU they are: the Rohrer College of Business, Communication & Creative Arts, Education, Engineering, Graduate & Continuing Education, Humanities & Social Sciences, Performing Arts, and Science & Mathematics.
Earlier in 2012, New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie awarded Rowan state research institution status (not Carnegie classification) as part of the New Jersey Medical and Health Science Education Restructuring Act, making Rowan only the second comprehensive public research institution in the State. That Act also opened the door to Rowan partnering with Rutgers-Camden to create a College of Health Sciences in Camden near CMSRU. The vision for that College calls for schools of medicine, nursing, pharmacy, public health, food science and 16 allied health programs. The University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey’s School of Osteopathic Medicine in nearby Stratford, N.J., is to become part of Rowan in the near future. When that occurs, Rowan will be only the second school in the nation with M.D. and D.O. medical programs.
