Veterinary Technician II - Small Animal Clinical Sciences

Regular Full-time, Market Range 05

The College of Veterinary Medicine invites applicants to apply for a new Veterinary Technician II position located in the Small Animal Clinical Sciences Department. Under the direction of a Veterinarian, this position provides nursing care in Internal Medicine by making patient assessments, preparing patients for exams or treatments, performing diagnostic tests and analyzing results, and recording patients' medical histories and symptoms, including observations.  Position administers medicine and treatments, establishes plan of care, and operates medical equipment.  Incumbent serves as a resource of information and guidance and is a liaison between doctors and the students/clients. Position supports teaching efforts by instructing students, interns, and residents. Must be able to cover on call shifts in ICU/Emergency service.

Typical Responsibilities:

Provides patient care in Internal Medicine by performing physical examinations of patients, collecting samples, performing medical procedures (blood Draws, intravenous catheter placement, fine needle aspirates, cystocentesis,etc.), and performing endoscopy procedures. Attends rounds with regard to hospitalized patients. Schedules appointments. Serves as a liaison between doctor and students/clients. Helps to establish a plan of care and confers with owner. Regularly communicates with supervising Clinician. Operates medical equipment. Collaborates with others to ensure quality patient care is received. Trains new employees. Works scheduled on-call after-hours with emergency and ICU.

Supports teaching efforts by instructing Veterinary Students in the following:

  • Sample collection
  • Venipuncture, aspirates, cystocentesis, etc.
  • Medical Procedures
  • Biopsies, fine needle aspirates, feeding tube placement, etc.
  • Physical exam
  • Computer orders (lab work, cultures, send out test)
  • Administration, monitoring, and recovery of patients from sedation/ anesthesia
  • Paperwork (filling out the proper paperwork for each part of the hospital)
  • Endoscopy
  • Provides greater oversight than level 1.  Ensures appropriate charges are entered and approved for patients. Provides estimates for potential clients who call in. Provides outside pharmacy communication to call in prescriptions for patients. Ensures treatment area and other work spaces are kept clean and organized. Oversees veterinary assistant with work in the area. Ensures work areas are well stocked and ready for use.



    Qualifications
    Minimum Qualifications:

    Associate’s or Bachelor’s Degree in Veterinary Technology.  Six (6) months of experience in a veterinary medical center or one (1) year in a private veterinary practice. Must be a graduate of an American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) accredited program in Veterinary Technology.  Must obtain a Tennessee license as a veterinary technician within one year of employment. Must be able to serve on-call shifts, after-hours in ICU and Emergency.

    Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Needed:

    Advanced knowledge of veterinary nursing.  Effective communication skills, including the ability to show compassion.  Excellent judgment and decision-making skills.  Good time management skills. Ability to express patience and deal with high levels of stress.  Ability to pay close attention to detail.  Ability to lift, assist, and transport patients.  Ability to train employees. Ability to teach and mentor junior staff.
