Work Schedule:

We offer flexible work hours, based on the student worker’s availability. The Center is open Monday-Thursday 8:00am – 10:00pm, Friday 8:00am – 5:00pm, Saturday 10:00am – 3:00pm, and Sunday 1:00pm – 9:00pm.

This position will require at least 5 – 10 hours per week.

This position will work a hybrid schedule with shifts that must be worked on campus and shifts that may be worked remotely.

Job Description Summary:

Located within the Learning Commons, the Academic Success Center (ASC) provides academic support across all majors and disciplines with the goal of helping students become engaged, self-sufficient learners who are confident in their abilities to reach their academic goals. ASC services include face-to-face tutoring, group tutoring, online tutoring, and academic skills workshops.
Learning Commons Academic Coaches work collaboratively with students to help
them develop the skills and confidence to become self-sufficient learners and to improve their skill sets, with a focus on holistic skills (time management, self-organization, study skills,
information literacy, etc.) necessary for college success & retention.

Specific Duties:

1. Help students develop their own best practices for becoming
self-sufficient learners during individual and group sessions offered both
face-to-face and online.
2. Develop and facilitate workshops, as assigned by ASC professional staff,
on holistic academic skills such as goal setting, time management,
self-organization, study skills, note-taking, media/information literacy,
and digital competence.
3. Develop supplemental ASC materials as assigned by ASC professional
staff (ASC academic coaching training materials & student resources,
etc.)
4. Collaborate with academic support staff to deliver customized group and
1-on-1 consultations per needs of assigned program or initiative,
including first-year experience, summer bridge, academic probation,
and/or all-but-thesis/all-but-dissertation students.
5. Attend paid professional development/consultant training sessions, or
complete online training modules, as assigned.
6. Gather and report accurate data for each student and/or session.
7. Other duties as assigned by the Director and/or ASC professional staff.

Minimum Qualifications:

1. A strong academic background (minimum overall undergraduate GPA of 3.25).
2. Ability to communicate effectively to help students construct their own understandings of
course materials.
3. Ability to listen to the needs of students and work cooperatively in setting realistic and
productive learning goals.
4. Sensitivity to the diverse socioeconomic, cultural, and academic backgrounds of ASC
students.
5. Dependability and personal accountability.
6. Self-motivation, self-regulation, and a desire to mature and learn in a professional
teaching/learning environment.

Preferred Qualifications:

1. Previous academic support experience.
2. College teaching experience with diverse student populations is strongly preferred.
3. 1 year of tutoring experience in a college setting.

Benefits Summary:

Employees are eligible for the following benefits:

One hour of Paid Sick Leave for every 30 hours worked, with a maximum accrual of 24 hours of Paid Sick Leave per year and capped at 48 hours.

University of La Verne Defined Contribution Retirement Plan – can contribute employee voluntary contributions, excluding wages derived from federal work study funds.

In accordance with the Affordable Care Act (ACA), employees who work an average of 30 or more hours per week, will be eligible for medical coverage through the University of La Verne.

Covered under the University of La Verne Workers Compensation Insurance.
