Job Summary

The voice captioning student assistant is responsible for developing the proficiency and skill necessary for working 1-on-1 with hearing-impaired students, providing live classroom captioning, echoing professor presentations, utilizing specialized voice recognition software. Captioning student assistants must learn to edit lecture notes and submit completed transcripts digitally to hearing-impaired student within 48 hours. Captioning student assistants must be able to communicate with professors and students in a friendly and professional manner. Working hours are determined by student classroom schedules. Perform other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

Candidate must be enrolled in a minimum of 6 credit hours at UWG with a cumulutive GPA of at least 2.0.

Candidate must possess the ability to listen and speak simultaneously, parroting the professor’s speech verbatim, into a masked microphone. Clear pronunciation, enunciation, and diction are imperative.

Candidate must have excellent focus, memory and concentration. Must be self-motivated, and reliable with the ability to work independently, meeting continuous deadlines.

Must have demonstrated ability to effectively communicate in a friendly and knowledgeable manner.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience with Windows desired, ability to type 40+ wpm. Experience with Dragon NaturallySpeaking software or IBM Via Voice is a plus. Editing skills are a plus. Previous simultaneous interpreting experience is a plus. Sensitivity to special populations desired.
