Job Description:

ECU Biology Department is seeking a front-desk receptionist to work in an extremely busy, complex, and fast-paced main office for one of the largest departments on ECU’s main campus.

The student will be expected to perform a wide range of office duties including but not limited to:

  • Greet all visitors warmly, respectfully, and courteously (faculty, staff, students, guests, business officials, technicians, and community)
  • Answer phones in a professional manner
  • Keep the front desk and reception area and office tidy and organized
  • Perform frequently high-volume copy jobs where accuracy is essential, on the job training is provided
  • Run frequent errands to adjacent offices/buildings (Bate, Flanagan, Old Cafeteria Complex, Sci&Tech, Spilman, Wright, etc.). This often includes hand-delivering time-sensitive and important/confidential documents that require being delivered to specific people (not just dropped off).
  • Accept packages from FedEx, UPS, USPS, etc. by properly logging packages; properly handling cold/sensitive/frozen packages by delivering cold packages to the upstairs freezer
  • Notify FedEx, UPS of packages that need to be shipped; take USPS outgoing packages to the on-campus Mail Services building
  • Assist faculty, staff, and students with tasks, directions, and questions
  • Interact with Copiserv for various tasks and work orders
  • Filing paperwork
  • Shredding items in bulk
  • Perform an inventory of office supplies and other items related to the department
  • Assist Biology staff with occasional projects
  • Maintain a positive and helpful attitude and dress appropriately (casual, but no hoodies, torn clothing, offensive or provocative clothing).
  • Perform occasional physical tasks such as carrying boxes, pushing carts
  • Assisting with occasional departmental events set up and break down

This position requires our ideal candidate to have good communication skills (verbal and written), to communicate with faculty, staff, and students.

Preferred (Majors, Experience, GPA, etc.):

  • Preferred applicants to NOT be BIOLOGY majors to avoid conflict of interest. Every applicant regardless of major will be considered.
  • Computer Skills required (MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook).
  • Punctuality and attendance. Abuse of this policy will result in termination or reduced hours.
  • If you have a lot of extracurricular activities that will keep you away or out a lot, please do not apply.
  • Preferred valid NC Driver License.
