Emerson College's Los Angeles Center (ELA) currently has two course openings for the Fall 2021 semester and seeks part-time affiliated faculty to teach in-person writing workshop classes in 1) television pilot writing and 2) prime-time or streaming drama.

Ideal candidates will have experience teaching at the undergraduate level, significant professional experience and achievement in writing for television, and an appropriate advanced degree in hand (preferred).

Affiliated faculty at ELA work under the supervision of the Academic Director and in consultation with the chairs and senior faculty at the appropriate academic department at Emerson's Boston campus. The appointment begins Sep. 1, 2021. The course meets once weekly for 14 weeks.

Courses are listed below:

VM423-LX1 / WR317-LX1 Topics in Television Writing / Topics in Creative Writing: Writing Television Pilots

Mondays, 2pm-5:45pm

Examines how to create a television series, including developing an original premise, and writing convincing, multi-dimensional characters, and intriguing, character-specific dialogue. Students write an entire television pilot script to be workshopped in class, along with a pilot package that includes a logline, series synopsis and a 13-week episode guide with character and story arcs.

VM329-LX1 / WR317-LX2 Topics in Television Writing / Topics in Creative Writing: The Streaming Drama

Tuesdays, 10am-1:45pm

Examines writing for the emergent sub-genre of the streaming television drama on such platforms as Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Prime, HBO Max, and Apple TV+ among others. Includes considerations of the history and parameters of the streaming services and existing streaming dramas, the difference between plot-driven and character-driven drama, and effective protagonists and antagonists. Students write and workshop a pilot of an original television drama series for streaming.

Emerson Los Angeles Center (ELA) is a residential semester away program for Emerson College and seniors. Qualified Emerson students may enroll for one semester of study at ELA and take on a full semester of internship opportunities and coursework, as well as personal and professional development workshops in the heart of Hollywood.
