Description
The full time Medical Assistant for the Lewis Katz School of Medicine’s Student Health Services will be responsible for receiving patients in a courteous, efficient manner and supporting physicians, nurse practitioners and nurses in the delivery of health care by performing a variety of medically related tasks in a primary care outpatient student health service practice including general medicine and gynecology visits. The incumbent may be assigned to two campuses (Main Campus and Health Sciences Campus).

Additionally, the Medical Assistant will be responsible for escorting patients to exam rooms; obtaining and recording vital signs, height, weight, temperature and chief complaint;  preparing patients for examination in conformance with provider’s needs; may require minimal lifting of patients; documenting patient care given in electronic medical record; utilizing a computerized medical information system to schedule appointments and to enter data for patient demographics, visit, diagnosis, procedures, immunizations and charges; providing health education to student patients; controlling flow of patients in and out of exam rooms; assisting with exams when requested to by a provider or patient; preparing lab specimens and lab slips; obtaining dipstick urinalysis as requested by physician; performing CLIA waived laboratory tests such as urine pregnancy and dipstick analysis as requested by physician or nurse practitioner; providing routine injections as ordered by physician or nurse practitioner; stocking patient exam rooms and assuring that the rooms are maintained in good order; assisting with vision and hearing screenings when needed; obtaining oral or axillary temperatures as directed; answering telephones, recording and relying on accurate information; assisting with referral completion, when needed; assisting providers and nurses with general care, as requested; participating in staff meetings, quality improvement projects and committees as appropriate; assisting in the coordination of outreach in cooperation with other departments, where appropriate, for specific medical issues, e.g., immunization programs; promoting health education and illness prevention initiatives throughout the University; and participating in the maintenance of an appropriate formulary by making recommendations for medical and surgical supplies. Performs other duties as assigned.

Required Education & Experience:

Medical Assistant Certification with at least two years’ experience. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.

Required Skills & Abilities:

*Strong written and oral communication skills.

*Demonstrates organizational skills with the ability to handle multiple tasks.

*Willingness to work with infectious agents.

*Proficient in standard lab/office equipment and software including MS office.

*Highly motivated individual capable of working independently or as part of a team.

This position requires a background check.

This position requires Child Abuse Certifications prior to the commencement of service.
