Description

This position will work closely with the Coordinator, Cultural Engagement & Inclusion, instructors, counselors, academic advisors and other staff to plan and coordinate retention activities assisting students of color to succeed in a higher learning environment.

Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities (include, but not limited to)

1. Advise potential at-risk students of barriers that interfere with educational goals. Monitor students’ progress and connect them with resources. Help students understand College policies, procedures, resources to assist them with their educational goals.
2. Serve as an advocate for students with internal departments that can expedite resolution of student issues/barriers. Establish and maintain positive relationships with instructors, coordinators and other internal positions that are key to students’ success.
3. Plan and coordinate retention services to assist students of color in making a smooth adjustment to the personal, social, and environmental life on campus and in the community.
4. Monitor students' academic progress, follow up and refer students in need of counseling, academic and additional supportive services to counselors, academic advisors, instructors, tutors, or other appropriate resources.
5. Perform planning and logistics required for MRC events such as the Multicultural Student Mentor Program, orientations, training, etc. Assist Coordinator, Cultural Engagement & Inclusion with recruitment and/or training faculty and leaders/scholars, maintaining records/documentation, compile data and provide reports.
6. Assist with planning events, promotional activities, and implementing participant recognition/celebration programs.
7. Provides customer service role for targeted students; oversees operation of department reception area; intake point for incoming students’ and troubleshooter of urgent issues. In-charge of work area in absence of Coordinator, Cultural Engagement & Inclusion.
8. Maintain current professional/ technical knowledge through professional education and activities.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

• Knowledge of and experience working with students
• Knowledge and understanding of student service functions in a higher education setting
• Effective interpersonal communication skills - oral, written and listening
• Ability to establish and maintain positive working relationships with internal (staff, management, personnel) and external contacts (clients and vendors), working with individuals from diverse backgrounds
• Ability to prioritize work and adapt to changing priorities
• Ability to manage time and organize work
• Ability to exercise independent judgment and discretion while executing program goals, polices, and regulations
• Intermediate level of proficiency with computer software applications such as word processing, spreadsheets, databases, presentations and/or publishing




Minimum Qualifications


• Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Behavioral Sciences, Human Services or related field
• One year experience working with diverse student populations
• Ability to speak one or more languages in addition to English is preferred
• Public speaking experience is preferred

The LTE Multicultural Resource Center Specialist supports the Office of Diversity, Equity, Inclusion & Compliance and is available on or before September 16, 2021.

Position Information

This position is Limited Term, full time, ending on or before June 30, 2022. Hours are generally Monday through Friday 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. Salary is listed at the 2021-2022 rates.

Interview
The interview process will have 2 parts:
1. Selected candidates will be asked to do a video interview via "Spark Hire"
2. Finalist will be invited to an in-person panel interview scheduled for Thursday August 26, 2021.
