Lecturer in Small Animal Dentistry and Oral Surgery

Location:
Philadelphia, PA
Open Date:
May 24, 2022
Description:

The Department of Clinical Sciences and Advanced Medicine, School of Veterinary Medicine, University of Pennsylvania (PennVet) is seeking applications for a lecturer position in small animal dentistry and oral surgery, with an optional Fellowship in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (OMFS). The position is ideally suited for recent graduates of a dentistry and oral surgery residency program or for others seeking to transition into an academic career. The successful candidate will spend 80% (42 weeks) of the academic year providing clinical service in PennVet’s Matthew J. Ryan Veterinary Hospital.  The lectureship will be a one-year, potentially renewable appointment. Start date is negotiable.

The position primarily involves clinical service and teaching in a busy university teaching hospital during the sabbatical leave of one of our current faculty members. Clinical service responsibilities will include provision of patient care and supervision of day-to-day operations of the Dentistry and Oral Surgery Service (DOSS). Teaching responsibilities will include small group and didactic instruction of veterinary students rotating through the service and mentoring of dentistry and oral surgery residents. In addition to student rounds and clinician rounds, the DOSS holds resident rounds, journal clubs, board review lectures, and laboratories. The different sections of the hospital offer additional academic rounds. The proximity of the veterinary school to Penn’s dental and medical schools fosters numerous collaborative research and clinical endeavors. Opportunity exists to participate in collaborative research projects within and outside the veterinary school.

The DOSS employs two (AVDC) board-certified specialists in support of the program, one of whom will be on sabbatical leave during the lectureship. There are 3 residents enrolled in the residency training program. More than 30 Diplomates of multiple American and European certifying colleges, who are leaders in their fields, support the DOSS. The hospital is a dynamic and intellectually stimulating environment with an excellent nursing staff and residents. The school is located amid a vibrant urban neighborhood that offers an abundance of cultural resources including music, art, theatres, and fine dining (www.upenn.edu/life-at-penn/philadelphia).

Qualifications:

Candidates must have a veterinary degree and either be a Diplomate of the American Veterinary Dental College (AVDC) or be eligible to sit for its certifying board examination.  They should be adept at both dentistry (dental radiology, exodontics, periodontal surgery, endodontics, restorative dentistry, prosthodontics, and orthodontics) and oral surgery (oral and maxillofacial trauma surgery, oral and maxillofacial tumor surgery, palate surgery, temporomandibular joint surgery, and salivary gland and regional lymph node surgery).

Salary will be commensurate with experience. Full university benefits including health, dental, vision, and retirement accompany the position.

Application Instructions:

Applications will be accepted immediately and reviewed until an appropriate candidate is identified. Interested applicants should apply electronically to http://apply.interfolio.com/90702.

The system will prompt you to attach a letter of intent including a statement of personal goals, curriculum vitae, and the names, addresses, and contact information for three references. The letter should be directed to Dr. Mark Rondeau, Chair of the Search Committee, Department of Clinical Sciences and Advanced Medicine, School of Veterinary Medicine, University of Pennsylvania, 3900 Delancey Street, Philadelphia, PA 19104-6010.  Questions regarding the position should be sent to: Peggy Alfarano, Search Coordinator at alfarano@upenn.edu
