Working Title:

IT System Administrator I

Anticipated Hiring Range:

$75,000 - $85,000

Work Schedule:

Monday - Friday, 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.

Job Location:

Raleigh, NC

Department :

College of Veterinary Medicine

About the Department:

The College of Veterinary Medicine (CVM) IT unit is poised to meet the diverse, continually changing information technology needs for the College of Veterinary Medicine. This includes all faculty, staff, students, researchers, administration, and Veterinary Hospital clinicians and staff. CVM IT will continue to drive the successful integration of new and innovative computing technologies at the college, support existing technologies, as well as protect the confidentiality, integrity, and availability of CVM IT assets and data.

Essential Job Duties:

This position is part of the CVM Computing Resources team, and will report to the IT Director for the group. From an IT services perspective, the role is located within the Tier 3 Engineering services area of Computing Resources and the incumbent will receive D2D work priorities and direction from the Lead Engineer. This position will provide primary Linux SysAdmin capabilities to the group (70%), but will also function as a backup Windows SysAdmin (30%) to provide service support redundancy in conjunction with the Lead Engineer. This position will also be expected to collaborate with the Computing Resources application development team to address instrument interfacing needs for the veterinary hospital and research/diagnostic labs. In addition, the Linux Engineer will assist with data automation scripts and support, providing in-depth and non-routine support for the Veterinary Hospital as well as the rest of the CVM.

The successful candidate must be skillful at identifying and resolving issues related to Linux (70%) and Windows (30%) server operating systems. This role will be expected to interact heavily with the main campus IT (OIT) to ensure NCSU ‘best practices’ are being followed with our locally hosted system stacks as well as our OIT and cloud-hosted environments.

The Linux Engineer role must be capable of leveraging scripting tools and web application development tools to address laboratory instrument interfacing needs for the CVM veterinary hospital and research/diagnostic lab areas. This will require interaction between our HIS (hospital information system) for patient medical records and our (LIS) Laboratory Information System for test results & analysis.

The role must be capable of providing Tier 2 Desktop support assistance in situations where resources are limited or the scope of the effort is significantly large or complex. This will require knowledge of Windows/Mac desktop clients as well as OS/application packaging & deployment frameworks such as SCCM, Casper, WDS, Wyse, etc.

The successful candidate must have the ability to understand and assimilate moderately complex technical information easily. The ability to educate other CVM Computing Resources staff on fundamental SysAdmin tasks within Unix/Linux/Windows is required for this position. They must collaborate closely with NCSU OIT (campus IT) to ensure process and technical tool alignment (wherever feasible) with other NCSU colleges and IT service partners. Although the majority of CVM faculty & staff project collaborations will occur with the Computing Resources application development and PM services, there will occasionally be situations where the Engineer will need to actively participate in customer requirements gathering efforts (especially for application enhancements specific to our laboratory environments at the CVM).

This role will have the opportunity to provide engineering support in CVM AWS/Azure hosted cloud environments as an extension to their normal Tier 3 Engineering work—based upon training and expertise with cloud DevOps and SysOps.

NC State: Think and Do

NC State was founded with a purpose: to create economic, societal and intellectual prosperity for the people of North Carolina and the country. We began as a land-grant institution teaching the agricultural and mechanical arts. Today, we're a pre-eminent research enterprise with 12 colleges excelling in all major academic fields.

NC State studentsOur 34,000 high-performing students take what they learn in the classroom and apply it in the real world by conducting research, working in internships and co-ops, and performing acts of world-changing service. That experiential education ensures that they leave here ready to lead the workforce. NC State's 13:1 student-faculty ratio is one of the reasons why we're the best college for your money in North Carolina (Money) and the No. 5 best value among public universities nationally (U.S. News & World Report).

Overcoming Challenges, Improving Lives

NC State is one of only two universities in the nation leading two National Science Foundation Engineering Research Centers — one developing wearable, self-powered health monitors, and the other researching smart-grid technology. We’re also leading interdisciplinary efforts to curb nuclear proliferation, help farmers confront climate change and build a new American manufacturing sector.

Our research doesn't just get published in a journal or sit on a shelf; it makes an impact. NC State is No. 6 nationwide in commercialization agreements based on university research, and we're No. 2 among universities without a medical school. Our Cooperative Extension Service provides research-based information to citizens in all 100 North Carolina counties. In addition, our industrial extension unit — Industry Expansion Solutions — has created an economic benefit for the state's manufacturers averaging $149 million per year since 2005.

Bright Minds Creating a Bold Future

NC State’s 9,000 faculty and staff are world leaders in their fields, bridging the divides between academic disciplines and training high-caliber students to meet tomorrow’s challenges. NC State students won two Goldwater scholarships, five Fulbright scholarships, one Churchill scholarship and a record-breaking 25 National Science Foundation graduate research fellowships in the 2016-2017 academic year. In addition, 25 faculty are members of the National Academies.
