College of Veterinary MedicineAbout the Department:
The College of Veterinary Medicine (CVM) IT unit is poised to meet the diverse, continually changing information technology needs for the College of Veterinary Medicine. This includes all faculty, staff, students, researchers, administration, and Veterinary Hospital clinicians and staff. CVM IT will continue to drive the successful integration of new and innovative computing technologies at the college, support existing technologies, as well as protect the confidentiality, integrity, and availability of CVM IT assets and data.Essential Job Duties:
This position is part of the CVM Computing Resources team, and will report to the IT Director for the group. From an IT services perspective, the role is located within the Tier 3 Engineering services area of Computing Resources and the incumbent will receive D2D work priorities and direction from the Lead Engineer. This position will provide primary Linux SysAdmin capabilities to the group (70%), but will also function as a backup Windows SysAdmin (30%) to provide service support redundancy in conjunction with the Lead Engineer. This position will also be expected to collaborate with the Computing Resources application development team to address instrument interfacing needs for the veterinary hospital and research/diagnostic labs. In addition, the Linux Engineer will assist with data automation scripts and support, providing in-depth and non-routine support for the Veterinary Hospital as well as the rest of the CVM.Other Responsibilities:
The successful candidate must be skillful at identifying and resolving issues related to Linux (70%) and Windows (30%) server operating systems. This role will be expected to interact heavily with the main campus IT (OIT) to ensure NCSU ‘best practices’ are being followed with our locally hosted system stacks as well as our OIT and cloud-hosted environments.
The Linux Engineer role must be capable of leveraging scripting tools and web application development tools to address laboratory instrument interfacing needs for the CVM veterinary hospital and research/diagnostic lab areas. This will require interaction between our HIS (hospital information system) for patient medical records and our (LIS) Laboratory Information System for test results & analysis.
The role must be capable of providing Tier 2 Desktop support assistance in situations where resources are limited or the scope of the effort is significantly large or complex. This will require knowledge of Windows/Mac desktop clients as well as OS/application packaging & deployment frameworks such as SCCM, Casper, WDS, Wyse, etc.
The successful candidate must have the ability to understand and assimilate moderately complex technical information easily. The ability to educate other CVM Computing Resources staff on fundamental SysAdmin tasks within Unix/Linux/Windows is required for this position. They must collaborate closely with NCSU OIT (campus IT) to ensure process and technical tool alignment (wherever feasible) with other NCSU colleges and IT service partners. Although the majority of CVM faculty & staff project collaborations will occur with the Computing Resources application development and PM services, there will occasionally be situations where the Engineer will need to actively participate in customer requirements gathering efforts (especially for application enhancements specific to our laboratory environments at the CVM).
This role will have the opportunity to provide engineering support in CVM AWS/Azure hosted cloud environments as an extension to their normal Tier 3 Engineering work—based upon training and expertise with cloud DevOps and SysOps.
