The Front of House Manager is responsible for the smooth operation of the theatre during a show night. The Front of House Manager welcomes the public to the theatre and oversees their safety and well-being before, during, and immediately after the show. They answer questions, listen to patrons' compliments and concerns, and make audience members feel welcome. The Front of House Manager is also responsible for understanding and implementing all safety procedures and ensuring that all front of house staff is trained appropriately.



Essential Functions

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned:

  • Train, schedule and supervise all front of house staff (ushers, ticket takers, coat check, etc.)
  • Direct and participate in the orderly seating of patrons, the collection of tickets and answers to inquiries concerning the building, program or other related information.
  • Handle patron problems and questions (broken seats, non-working elevators, over-flowed restrooms, etc.)
  • Assure adherence to Fire Marshall requirements, ADA regulations and college policies.
  • Liaison with external road managers regarding late seating and special requirements concerning photography, etc.
  • Work with Coordinator of Technical Services in preparing the theatre to open on time.
  • Assist travelling concessionaires with sales and settles final sales numbers and collects the college’s negotiated percentage of revenue.
  • Record coat check and concessions revenue for deposit at Business Office.
  • Work closely with Events Services personnel and security regarding physical plant needs, problems, and emergency medical problems.
  • Responsible for understanding, supporting and actively demonstrating the College’s beliefs, values, mission and vision and being in agreement to be evaluated by same.
  • SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

    Supervises Front of House staff, which is normally 10-12 individuals for major shows. The necessary staff is called in from a core of 20-25 individuals who work on-call.

    CONTACTS AND PURPOSE OF CONTACTS

    Internal: Regular contact with department personnel to share information on events. Works with personnel from facilities department (events services team) and security personnel.

    External: Frequent contact with patrons attending events in theaters, touring managers, liaison with local theater companies, high schools and other external clients.

    QUALIFICATIONS

    Education and/or Experience

    One year certificate from college or technical school; or three to six months related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

    Minimum

  • Thorough knowledge of theatrical front of house operations.
  • Ability to work evenings and weekends
  • Preferred

  • Ability to multi-task and problem-solve in a fast-paced work environment
  • Strong team building and management skills; must be responsible, mature and able to maintain calm control in stressful or emergency situations.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to utilize personal computer to look up patron seat numbers in box office.
  • Language Skills

    Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization.

    Mathematical Skills

    Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.

    Reasoning Ability

    Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

Rapid enrollment and program growth in the 1960s spurred construction of a new campus on its present site. In 2013, in light of the College’s decision to begin development of curriculum for bachelor’s degree programs and increased efforts in international studies, the Board of Trustees voted to change the name to Jackson College.

    Today, the College owns more than 500 acres and sits on a scenic rural site six miles south of the city of Jackson, and also operates Jackson College @ LISD TECH in Adrian, Clyde E. LeTarte Center, Hillsdale, and W.J.
