Nature of WorkThe Department of Community and Behavioral Health (CBH) in the Colorado School of Public Health (ColoradoSPH) has an opening for a full-time position at the rank of Senior Professional Research Assistant (Sr. PRA). 

The Sr. PRA will join an injury and violence prevention research, evaluation, and translational science program. The successful candidate will have project operations/management, data collection, and public health education/outreach experience in the injury prevention field. The successful applicant will be expected to provide outreach, education, and translational support on multiple federal and state projects focused on firearm injury prevention, substance abuse prevention, and positive youth development. As part of these projects, the candidate will interact with academic partners and community members from a wide range of backgrounds, including local public health agencies, community-based organizations, and the firearm community (e.g., second amendment (2A) organizations).

The Colorado School of Public Health is a collaborative endeavor involving the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus (CU Anschutz), Colorado State University (CSU), and the University of Northern Colorado (UNC). The Colorado School of Public Health is the first and only accredited school of public health in the Rocky Mountain Region, attracting top tier faculty and students from across the country, and providing vital contributions towards ensuring our region’s health and wellbeing. Collaboratively formed in 2008 by CU Denver, CSU and UNC, the Colorado School of Public Health provides training, innovative research and community service to actively address public health issues including chronic disease, access to healthcare, environmental threats, emerging infectious diseases, and costly injuries.

Supervision ReceivedThis position will report to Erin Kelly, Research Associate in the Department of Community and Behavioral Health.

None required; may supervise student workers or professional research assistants/staff as career develops.

Examples of Work Performed

  • Plan and direct an outreach and educational strategy and activities for firearm injury prevention, and train other colleagues on this strategy.
  • Design and implement communications and marketing efforts for the Injury Center and firearm injury prevention initiatives.
  • Create communications to support partnership engagement, data collection and project reporting, including FAQs, fliers, presentations, executive reports, and other supplementary materials.
  • Develop and maintain a menu of evidence-based community-level prevention strategies to address shared risk and protective factors and substance abuse prevention in local communities.
  • Translate scientific information in practical, applicable terms to apply research and data to local context and decision-making.
  • Develop dissemination products such as reports, presentations, proposals, and manuscripts to a variety of academic and community audiences.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Ability to manage projects from conception to conclusion, project timelines, managing tasks of colleagues, and seeking out efficiencies.
  • Expertise in collaborative relationship building and working with non-academic partners, including government agencies, the local public health community, schools, and the firearms community (retailers, shooting ranges, NRA instructors, second amendment (2A) organizations).
  • Exceptional interpersonal communications skills, including ability to listen and speak to a variety of diverse audiences, facilitate groups and meetings, and write professionally.Critical thinking skills with the ability to objectively analyze an issue to creatively find a solution.Ability to be highly self-directed, as well as a collaborative team player.Ability to address and resolve conflict directly, professionally, and in a timely manner.
Salary and BenefitsThe salary for this position has been established at $58,000 for 80% of a full-time position. The salary of the finalist(s) selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to, rank, internal equity, experience, education, and area of expertise. The above salary range represents the University’s good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.

Qualifications
QUALIFICATIONS:

Required Qualifications

  • Master’s Degree in a related field (e.g., public health, sociology, public affairs, social work) or at least 4 years tested experienced relevant to the public health discipline.
  • At least 3 years of injury, violence, and/or mental health research, evaluation, or translational science experience.
  • At least 3 years of experience translating and disseminating research findings to public health practice and community audiences.
  • Prior experience working with stakeholders from a wide range of backgrounds and political affiliations, including Second Amendment organizations and individuals.
  • Applicants must meet minimum qualifications at the time of hire.

     

    Preferred Qualifications

  • Evidence of project management training or certification (e.g. Scrum, Agile, PMP, Coursera, LinkedIn Learning).
  • Advanced skills with communication software such as Canva or Adobe Creative Cloud.
  • Demonstrated experience writing reports, FAQs, or guidance documents for public health practice communities.
