We value the ability to engage effectively with students, faculty and staff of diverse backgrounds.Nature of WorkThis Professional Research Assistant (PRA) will assist in the generation of preclinical animal models for studies aimed at the development of immunotherapies for autoimmunity and cancer. This position will be part of the Pre-clinical Human Immune System Mouse models (PHISM) service facility co-directed, along with Dr. Roberta Pelanda, and managed by Dr. Julie Lang in the Human Immunology and Immunotherapy Initiative (HI3) in the Department of Immunology and Microbiology, University of Colorado School of Medicine. The PHISM facility is a team of researchers dedicated to performing human immunology studies with collaborators within and outside of UCD-AMC.Supervision ReceivedYes, by the Manager of facilitySupervision ExercisedNoExamples of Work Performed- Help maintain the mouse colony for the facility (husbandry, weaning, health, etc)
- Genotype and phenotype mice
- Routinely inject mice with human cells, collect blood from mice to analyze human cells, and perform treatments of mice
- Collects, accurately records and analyzes mouse records and data in conjunction with other research staff
- Purify white blood cells from umbilical cord blood preps
- Help with dissections and tissue processing
- Provide general support to manager and users of facility
- Perform surgical procedures on mice as needed
- Perform basic flow cytometric analyses
- Perform and interpret ELISA assays
- Perform and interpret PCR analyses
- Maintain the laboratory and equipment in working and clean conditions
- Maintain laboratory compliance to safety regulations
- Order reagents and materials and oversee inventor as needed
- Maintains laboratory records, supplies, samples in an organized manner

Qualifications
Minimum Requirements
- BS or BA in biology or related fields.
- Experience and background in animal handling and basic laboratory techniques are highly desired.
- An strong eagerness to learn is adequate substitution for experience.
- The successful candidate for this position will be detail-oriented, organized, able to work under supervision and in a team, and capable of learning several routine methodologies.
- The work will be 40-50% mouse-oriented with the remaining consisting of lab procedures.
- Working as a member of a team is essential.
