SUMMARY:

Under general supervision, the Assistant Director position will assists office leadership in providing services to the international and study abroad population hosted at A&M-Commerce. Responsibilities will including supervising staff.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Under general supervision, this position assists office leadership in providing services to international students, Study abroad students, faculty, and staff. Has occasional office administrative duties including staff supervision. Has access to protected information under FERPA and HIPAA.
  • Serve as the Designated School Official and Alternative Responsible Official. Provide F-1/J-1 visa regulation interpretation in accordance with federal laws that govern the F-1/J-1 visa, and university policy. Requires issuing immigration documents (I-20/DS-2019) as needed for international students abroad to apply for student visas or students transferring to the university. Ensures compliance with guidelines and the Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS).Requires reporting and maintaining the Student and Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP), monitored by the Department of Homeland Security (overseers of SEVIS) on international student activities; registration, U.S. departures; failure to register; changes of immigration status; work authorizations and other relevant events pertinent to international student's stay in the U.S.
  • Advise international students on immigration regulations that govern the F-1/J-1 student visa; including offering support and guidance to the student's immigration related questions and status while in the U.S.
  • Maintains international student records, databases, and assist with admissions related processing and other advising related administrative tasks, such as preparing memos, researching and preparing reports, estimating expenses that support an F-1 visa (for I-20 purposes). Prepare federal documents, and applications.
  • The position will require oversight of the international admissions support, including disseminating information to prospective international students regarding their matriculation into the University and its programs. Requires meeting with international students and their families; continuous communication with current and prospect international students via phone, email and Skype; advise on the immigration process of transfer students and students abroad. Responsible for preparing and sending informational packets such as required information for enrollment, welcome letters, orientation schedules, and housing information to international students.
  • Provides admission information to prospective students; will conduct strategic armchair recruitment efforts as necessary.
  • This position will monitor and advise on mandatory student health insurance policy; and maintain an international student health insurance report, including organizing and maintaining student health insurance database.
  • The position will require oversight of the study abroad, including disseminating information to students and faculty regarding different options. Requires meeting with students, and faculty; continuous communication with students and faculty via phone, email and Skype; advice on the study abroad process. Responsible for preparing informational packets for study abroad. Provides information on study abroad; will conduct strategic armchair recruitment efforts as necessary.
  • Assist with planning and coordinating cultural events, new student check-in, immigration orientations, immigration seminars, special topic workshops, and joint programming with other campus or community entities.
  • Prepare and create presentations, reports, brochures, handouts relevant to international students, including undocumented students. Responsible for the department social media; produces digital slides and printed publications and maintains the department website.
  • Identify program goals; develop strategies to meet the goals, coordinate efforts with appropriate offices within the university; and assist with special projects as requested.
  • Supervise student workers’ workloads and oversight of the International Program Coordinator and International Student Advisor I.
  • Oversight of the International Ambassador Program which requires supervising and training ambassadors, while maintaining schedules of commitments and/or events. Responsibilities to include expanding mentorship program objectives to ensure pre-arrival experience of international students is seamless. Will assist newly arrived international students by pairing students with ambassadors that will help international student with their transition to the campus culture.
  • Assist the director with International Student Emergency Fund designed for international students. Requires assisting international students with the application and qualifying process; to include reviewing documentation to support criteria relevant to need-based applications. Responsibilities to include seeking new resources for international students, and working with appropriate campus stakeholder in vetting and implementing funds for international students. Performs other duties as assigned to include, but not limited to participating in professional development and training.
  • Reporting to the Director of Office of International Programs (OIP), the Assistant Director for OIP is a leadership position responsible for advancing initiatives that enhance a thriving international student population.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree plus 6 years of related experience in applicable field or equivalent of education and experience.
  • Experience / Knowledge / Skills: 6 years of related international advisor experience. Demonstrated experience working with diverse student and community populations. Experience providing services to people of diverse cultural background, experiences and ages. Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite. Excellent oral and written and communication skills. And excellent decision making skills. Ability to create and present ideas and budgets in a variety of formats. Successful completion of an employment and/or criminal background check required.
  • Ability to: Ability to multitask and work cooperatively with others. Ability to work with sensitive information and maintain confidentiality with international people. Ability to comprehend and communicate technical effectively and diplomatically. Ability to learn laser Fiche, admissions accessing software and other software. Ability to travel.
  • Licensing/Professional Certifications: Valid driver’s license.
  • Physical Requirements: Occasionally lift up to 15 pounds at times.
  • Other Requirements: U.S. citizenship or legal permanent resident status is required by law in order to access and use SEVIS.

PREFERRED EDUCATION / SKILLS/ EXPERIENCE:

Master’s degree in Higher education or international education. Three (3) or more years directly related to experience. Experience living or working abroad. Active member of NAFSA: Association of International Educators.

FOR CONSIDERATION:

  • Bachelor’s degree plus 6 years of related experience working with F-1 and J-1 exchange students, intercultural learning and international student development, or an equivalent combination of education and related experience. Other qualifications that the successful candidate will preferably have are:
  • Experience living or studying abroad and proficiency in a second language preferred
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Successful completion of an employment and/or criminal background check required
