Under the direction of the Assistant Director, Business Operations, the Senior Financial Analyst provides direct support to UTSC’s business operations portfolio, which includes service ancillaries and self-funded operating departments. The Senior Financial Analyst is the point of contact on a variety of queries relating to financial issues, policies, procedures, and guidelines involving ancillaries and self-funded operating departments. The incumbent provides expert advice and support to short and long-term financial planning, reporting, strategic alignment, and business proposals, ultimately resulting in value added decision-making. The incumbent reviews on an annual basis, financial strength and viability of ancillary and self-funded departments at UTSC; provides analysis and recommendations to senior management on financial viability of departments, which may impact business delivery models, service and staffing levels, and assesses viability of new initiatives ultimately leading to acceptance or rejection of venture by senior management.

The Senior Financial Analyst independently performs a variety of functions that are critical to the financial management of business operation departments at UTSC, particularly in the areas of planning and budgeting, financial analysis, financial modelling, financial performance against KPIs and business process analysis. The incumbent leads the annual ancillary budget process by partnering with units to review, reconcile and audit all proposed operating plans to achieve reliability, accuracy and compliance of Service Ancillary Review Group guidelines before its presentation by the Chief Administrative Officer to committees of Governing Council. S/he will monitor, analyse and report on budget to actual variances on a regular basis, engaging unit Business Officers and Directors in the process. The incumbent will create financial models (e.g. business cases, pricing models, cost recovery models, long-range budgets, forecasts, amortization schedules, capital investment decisions) to facilitate strategic planning and decision making by senior management. S/he will model and analyse impacts, risks, and options for proposed new business initiatives and opportunities, including capital spending proposals. The incumbent must be able to perform quantitative and qualitative analyses on a variety of prospective projects under time constraints, and understands the opportunity to support UTSC business operations by reviewing results against key performance indicators in pursuit of revenue and market share optimization.

The incumbent will audit the existence and effectiveness of internal controls and conduct operational process reviews as well as adequately document processes, articulate implications of observed risks, and recommend policies or procedures to mitigate those risks.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS (Minimum):

EDUCATION: University degree in Business Administration, Commerce or Accounting, and completion of a recognized professional accounting designation. MBA is an asset.

EXPERIENCE: Minimum seven (7) years of recent related experience in financial accounting, reporting, modeling, costing, budgeting and analysis, preferably in a university or comparable not-for-profit business entity. A thorough understanding and practical application of accounting standards for not-for-profit organizations and HST. Significant experience creating, maintaining, and analyzing complex financial models. Experience in the preparation of comprehensive financial reports, forecasts, and analysis as well as ability to improve the accuracy of reports prepared outside of the portfolio. Experience conducting financial trend analysis and proposing effective strategies to clients. Experience using FIS and HRIS systems and knowledge of University of Toronto policies and procedures are a definite asset. SKILLS: Demonstrated ability to organize and execute a variety of complex assignments simultaneously and manage conflicting priorities within required timelines. Adaptive and demonstrates an ability to solve problems and apply critical thinking skills with strong business intelligence and acumen. Excellent oral and written communications skills to effectively communicate to both non-financial and financial individuals at varying levels of the organization. Must be self-motivated, results oriented with exceptional organizational skills. Acute attention to detail. Excellent judgment to prioritise projects and take initiative on observations in own portfolio in an environment of continuous change. Excellent interpersonal skills. Ability to work effectively independently and as a member of a team.

OTHER: A mindset for continuous improvement and development as the incumbent is critical in facilitating the growth and performance of business operations at UTSC. Must demonstrate an understanding and appreciation for the financial challenges related to self-funded operations within the University. Very strong customer service orientation. Strategic orientation and ability to think outside the box. High level of professional standard.
