About us:

The Southern Ontario Smart Computing Innovation Platform (SOSCIP) is a research and development consortium funded by the federal and provincial governments and IBM. The consortium pairs academic and industry researchers with advanced computing tools to fuel innovation leadership in Canada across all sectors including but not limited to health, water, energy, cities, mining, advanced manufacturing, digital media, cybersecurity.

The University of Toronto and Western University co-lead the administration of the consortium on behalf of all members. Governed by a Board of Directors co-chaired by the Vice-Presidents Research at the University of Toronto and Western University and a Scientific Advisory Committee (SAC), the consortium supports collaborative research projects and innovation between university researchers and industry, primarily small- and medium-sized enterprises. Projects are granted access and allocations on specific SOSCIP’s multiple computing platform(s). In addition, SOSCIP provides technical, research and commercialization support to projects. SOSCIP also provides critical opportunities for training and development of highly-qualified personnel on advanced research computing and data analytics tools.

Your opportunity:

Reporting to the Executive Director, the Partnership & Business Development Lead is responsible for the prospecting, facilitation, development, strategic implementation and administration of SOSCIP collaborative research projects. The Partnership & Business Development Lead ensures the success of SOSCIP collaborative projects, including ensuring they are meeting their milestones and deliverables and overseeing all project reporting. The Partnership & Business Development Lead works closely with the Executive Director on strategic planning and partnership building and contributes to the development and execution of the consortium’s sustainability and strategic communications plans.

The Partnership & Business Development Lead is responsible for developing and implementing practices, policies, procedures and tools with respect to all aspects of project management of SOSCIP collaborative projects. This includes providing hands on support and guidance to strategic research projects as they are under development, as well as identifying challenges that ongoing projects face and other barriers to success and developing solutions to those problems. ThePartnership & Business Development Lead works closely with the SOSCIP Technical Lead and technical support staff to ensure that the computing platforms are being used effectively and to their fullest extent.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Researching and recommending new opportunities for external collaborations and partnerships
  • Promoting research programs to potential industry collaborators
  • Developing project schedules including milestones, critical path, timelines, deliverables and reporting. Analyzing market data to determine trends and effectiveness of programs and initiatives.
  • Delivering presentations to promote programs, opportunities and/or initiatives.
  • Promoting the University's research capabilities to industrial, governmental and finance sectors to enhance research and innovation funding opportunities.

Essential Qualifications:

  • Master's degree in engineering, science, business or equivalent combination of experience.
  • Six to seven (6 - 7) years relevant experience with business development, partnership development, working with external clients and stakeholders to develop research projects
  • Solidproject management experience including all aspects of project development and execution; project scale up, monitoring, evaluation
  • Strong experience in business development, networking, project development and research collaborations
  • Experience in assessing, formulating and articulating a business case for partnering on high-quality academic-industry research and development problems
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and demonstrated ability to liaise, build partnerships and manage stakeholder relationships
  • Demonstrated ability to handle conflicting and multiple priorities, superior organizational skills and time management skills
  • Excellent interpersonal skills to build consensus, employ multiple approaches and manage the conflicting expectations of multiple stakeholders and to lead project teams; Proven success in resolving project disputes and conflicts between project stakeholders
  • Demonstrated ability to work with public and private sector entities to build new types of partnerships; Proven ability to liaise, build and maintain relationships with internal and external stakeholders; Demonstrated ability to support commercialization activities
  • Ability to bring projects to successful completion; determining resource shortages and reacting to prevent bottlenecks from occurring; and collaborating with stakeholders; and highly attentive to details
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to collaborate on initiatives with a wide variety of contacts both internal and external to the University
  • Demonstrated commitment to principles of equity, diversity, and inclusion
  • Exceptional oral and written communication skills; presentation skills; Ability to compile and analyze data, prepare reports and other informational materials
  • Ability to resolve conflict, apply an entrepreneurial approach to complex problem solving, create plans and materials where few parameters are provided
  • Strong computer skills including proficiency with Microsoft Office
