Your opportunity:

Reporting to the Manager - Education Technology Office, the Educational Technology Technician promotes a scholarly and evidence-based approach to support students and educators at the Faculty of Applied Science and Engineering, providing educational technology supports to enhance pedagogical practices and to improve the student learning experience. Our mandate includes supporting the pedagogical goals of faculty members, sessional and course instructors to improve learning and to support course development that explicitly includes learning outcomes, delivery and assessment.

The Educational Technology Technician is responsible for assisting faculty, TAs and staff in the use of academic technology, including responding to queries on University supported technologies, troubleshooting technical issues, orienting to and demonstrating academic technologies, and acting as a resource for related questions. The incumbent participates in project planning and development meetings. The incumbent enhances teaching and learning using technology, advises on best practices and prepares detailed instructional documents and media guides as well as leads group and individual training sessions.


The Educational Technology Technician builds learning objects for online consumption using industry standard e-authoring tools. The incumbent creates and manipulates images, creating volume design in accordance with given specifications; produces short tablet videos in collaboration with others including basic video editing.
The incumbent provides backup for computer, network and software support as well as lecture capture.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Probing for information from end-users to identify problems and establish needs
  • Conducting needs assessments to determine end-user technical requirements
  • Configuring web applications according to objectives or user feedback
  • Assessing and determining best practices and standards for multiple instructional modalities
  • Providing formal job-related training
  • Researching, analyzing and recommending potential changes to system features
  • Facilitating educational workshops and seminars
  • Serving as a resource to a group or on a function

+Essential Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Minimum three years of related experience in educational development and/or training and development and experience with technical support, troubleshooting, and editing
  • Demonstrated experience in teaching and training users on new technologies and tools and working in an educational or learning environment is required
  • Strong Quercus and Blackboard LMS software knowledge or similar platforms, including knowledge of common issues and how to be addressed
  • Proficiency with the use of audio visual equipment
  • Knowledge of social media integration
  • Exposure to common academic technologies such as LMS, webinar, and lecture capture tools is required
  • Demonstrated ability to learn quickly from reference manuals and on-line help resources.
  • Able to communicate and work effectively with faculty, course instructors, TAs, support staff and university administrators
  • Able to successfully meet deadlines


Assets (Nonessential):

  • Certificate in Instructional Design preferred
  • Graphic design experience considered an asset
