General Summary

The Department of World Languages, Eastern Michigan University, is currently seeking part time lecturers (PTLs) for our TESOL and Bilingual Education programs. The number of positions depends on the number of classes available each semester.

The PTL will teach courses capped at 25 students at the sophomore level, who are seeking our TESOL minor or major, or our Bilingual Education major. Students may be planning to teach overseas, or may be seeking a K-12 ESL teaching endorsement in Michigan.

Typical courses include Grammar for ESL Teachers (LNGE 202), Introduction to Language (LNGE 223), Linguistic and Cultural Diversity: Global Englishes (LNGE 240), Linguistic and Cultural Diversity in the US (LNGE 242), Introduction to Working with Linguistically and Culturally Diverse Learners (TSLN 251). Depending on the number of students registered, a well-qualified candidate may be asked to teach in our TESOL methodology series.

Courses meet 3 hours a week, typically scheduled on Monday/Wednesday or Tuesday/Thursday, Aug. 30 through Dec. 17. PTLs are also expected to hold office hours.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

Teaching may include a number of particular obligations which employees are expected to fulfill, including but not limited to: meeting with students during and outside of assigned classes, assessing student work and performance, preparing syllabi and course materials, providing copies of syllabi and course materials to their supervisor on request, and assigning and submitting grades in accordance with established Eastern Michigan University schedules.


Qualified candidates should hold a Master's degree in ESL or TESOL, be enrolled as a Ph.D. student in a related field (ABD preferred), and have 2 years' teaching experience. Facility in a second language preferred. Candidate must be eligible to work in the US and be able to teach face-to-face on EMU's Ypsilanti campus as needed.

The report also contains fire statistics for any fires occurring in an On-Campus Student Housing Facility during the three most recent calendar years.
