Position Summary:

Receives assignments in the form of objectives with goals and the process by which to meet goals. Supervises EH&S professional and technical level staff engaged in monitoring, preventing and implementing environmental health and safety programs. May oversee multiple scientific and technical disciplines, integrating criteria to meet compliance requirements. May recommend changes to department policies and practices. May serve on system-wide technical committees to develop subject area improvements or compliance. Incumbent is assigned responsibility for the management of campus Lab Safety Inspections Program, Dive and Field Safety, Occupational Health activities, including medical provider agreements, and the management and supervision of 4 professional research safety staff. Recommends, develops, and implements innovative programs and systems that address regulatory requirements and best professional practices for Lab Safety Inspections and Occupational Health activities including generating metric reports on performance and findings for lab safety inspections, managing the documentation preparation for quarterly campus wide Lab Safety Committee meetings, lab safety training compliance, Controlled Substances, Lab Animal Occupational Health and vivarium safety, Personal Protective Equipment, medical surveillance and DOT Drug and Alcohol testing, high hazard and process safety, and toxic gas cylinders.

Compensation Range:

Annual Rate: $80,600-$103,000

Required:

Bachelor's degree in a related field (or equivalent combination of education and experience) and 5 years programmatic experience in research or laboratory EH&S field. Minimum three years of supervisory experience is required.

Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.

Comprehensive knowledge and understanding of EH&S technical requirements, logistics, materials and operations, rules, regulations, laws, etc. Skills to effectively direct and supervise a diverse subordinate staff who are assigned duties in different programs; skills to effectively integrate several highly regulated subject and program areas. Solid written, verbal and interpersonal communications skills, including strong skills to interact successfully with a widely diverse population. Knowledge to recognize and effectively deal with health and safety issues which may generate adverse media coverage for the University. Ability to maintain confidentiality. Solid skills to organize, prioritize and complete projects within budget and time constraints. Ability to analyze a wide range of information, both text and financial, into coherent summaries and reports. Solid skills to appropriately, efficiently and effectively respond to emergencies and critical situations. Significant knowledge of federal and state regulatory requirements and standards related to occupational health and controlled substances, and experience in their application to a higher education environment. General knowledge of state and local codes and regulations relating to health and safety matters within the University. Proficient in MS office and computer savvy. Skills to utilize the latest in computer technology.

Preferred:

Master's Degree in related field

Professional certification

Demonstrated technical expertise in all EH&S areas managed. Significant EH&S program development in all areas managed.

Special Conditions Required:

  • Must have a valid CA Driver's license and participate in DMV Pull Notice program
  • Must be able to wear PPE
  • Must be able to work outside of regularly scheduled shift and participate as a member of the Emergency Support Team
  • Requires working onsite.
