Detailed Description:	
• Designs and assists in the development and ongoing maintenance of full-scale environmental health and safety practices/program to provide for the safety of the campus community and surrounding environment.
• Performs quality work throughout the full spectrum of environmental health and safety issues as mandated by City, County, State and Federal regulations related to; acquisition, storage, use and disposal of hazardous materials/waste, medical wastes, asbestos and waste water discharge, and fire safety.
• Directly assists in implementation of City/County/Sate Federal Regulations with respect to compliance by departments and personnel. Serve as central resource for environmental health and safety questions or concerns.
• Maintains campus chemical inventory and SDS files.
• Conducts New Employees Safety Training, hazard communication training and various other industrial hygiene and safety trainings.
• Coordinates air sampling and suspect material sampling.
• Acts as first responder to hazardous materials and oil releases. Tracks environmental, health, safety and fire safety regulations\legislations.

Duties & Responsibilities:

General Management
• Has primary responsibility for replying to all emails, phone calls, and communications from the University of San Diego community regarding any environmental health and safety
• Creates systems which provide for compliance with City, County, State, and Federal Codes/Regulations with respect to hazardous materials, environmental health and safety items.
• Acts as a liaison with regulatory agencies.
• Develops budget proposals for all environmental health and safety projects/programs.
• Maintains an acute awareness and interactive communication of the typical hazards of the work place as well as the special hazards that may be encountered at any University facility location about environmental health and safety.
• Researches and executes any paperwork related to environmental health and safety issues.
• Supervises Environmental Health and Fire Safety staff.
• Participates in professional organizations.

Safety and Fire Safety Management
• Coordinates safety inspections per the University Injury and Illness Prevention Program.
• Monitor asbestos abatement projects. Coordinate asbestos inspection, sampling and air sampling.
• Coordinates all the medical surveillance tests for respiratory users and ear protection users.
• Coordinates all ergonomic evaluations.
• Supervises all the fire safety inspections; annual, semiannual, quarterly and monthly fire equipment and system testing.
• Supervises compliance of elevator safety inspections.

Environmental Management
• Coordinates with end users of chemicals procedures related to safe handling, storage and disposal of hazardous and non-hazardous materials and medical waste.
• Maintains campus chemical inventory and chemical SDS files.
• Acts as first responder in case of hazardous material release.
• Researches and tracks pending and current environmental legislation.
• Updates and informs end users of chemicals known to the State of California to cause cancer, birth defects, or other reproductive harm (Prop 65).
• Updates annual reports relate to Clean Air Act, Clean Water Act, Hazardous Materials and Hazardous Waste.
• Coordinates all annual source tests for boilers and underground storage tank tests.
• Coordinates and schedules with Cal/OSHA and Insurance Company for Permit to operate Air Pressure Tank.

Industrial Hygiene Management
• Oversees the Lab Safety Compliances.
• Coordinates biosafety hoods annual certification.
• Conducts campus wide hazardous communication training and various industrial hygiene trainings.
• Updates, coordinates and provides training for the blood borne pathogens and air transmissible disease program.
• Coordinates and monitors indoor air quality and mold.
• Coordinates Annual Respiratory and Hearing Conservation check up.

Job Requirements:
Minimum Qualifications:

• Require Bachelor's Degree in Science related field (Chemistry preferred), Environmental Science, Occupational Safety, or similar field of study
• Minimum of five years related experience in Higher Education or similar environment

Preferred Qualifications:
• Prefer Master's Degree in Public Health, Science or Industrial Hygiene or will consider other applicable majors

• City and County regulations including the Department of Health

• Federal OSHA Regulations
• Cal/Fed EPA Regulations
• Fire safety regulations and best practices

• Demonstrated managerial/supervisory skills including but not limited to sound leadership, evaluating, performance management program reviews, knowledge of University and Departmental policies, procedures and practices.
• Must possess good interpersonal skills including tact, diplomacy, and flexibility.
• Ability to maintain a professional working relationship with students, faculty, staff, trustees, consultants and neighbors.
• Must possess the ability to work well with diverse personalities.
• Be able and willing to represent the University in the most positive manner.
• Establish and maintain strong working relationships with colleagues, staff, administrators, students, trustees, public agencies and the general public.
• Excellent communication skills, both oral and written, and proficient in use of computer and other office technologies as well as systems needed to perform job duties.

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:
• Hazardous Waste in California Certificate (Annual)
• Hazardous Materials Transportation Certificate (Every 3 years)
• Must possess a valid California Driver's License and may be required to drive University vehicles.

Special Conditions of Employment:
• May be called back for emergency work.
• May provide information to various regulatory agencies.
• May be required to attend seminars or training sessions relating to interpretation of current regulations or updating knowledge of new or proposed regulations.
• Act as first responder to hazardous material releases or other emergencies.

Tools & Equipment Used:
Computer, telephone, fax, and other related office equipment. Respirators, SCBA, sampling, air pumps and other response equipment.
