    Job Description University of Missouri-St. Louis (UMSL) invites nominations and applications for an innovative academic higher education professional to serve as the Director of Institutional Research and Data Analytics.

    This leader plans and directs institutional research and reporting to support the strategic goals of UMSL, and is a vital collaborator to the campus and system leadership teams. The director supports the effective use and reporting of data so that the campus can measure and respond in a timely manner to key strategic priorities.

    The director will lead this unit that, among other activities, fulfills a wide range of institutional data requirements, including accreditation support, measurement of student success initiatives, strategic enrollment planning, and submission of rankings-related data to external agencies.

    In addition to data collection and analysis, the director will continuously improve self-service tools that enable campus end users to access and use institutional data. The director must have the capacity to not only collect and report data but to provide thoughtful insight to the campus leadership on how they might analyze data to make informed decisions about future campus directions.

    The Director will build relationships and partner with units across the campus community to continue to advance UMSL’s culture of inclusive excellence.

    The director reports directly to the UMSL Vice Chancellor for Finance and indirectly to the UM System Assistant Vice President for Institutional Effectiveness, and is expected to build the campus capacity to identify and use data to respond to internal and external demands and inform strategic campus priorities.

    Responsibilities Work closely with the campus and system leadership teams to develop analyses and studies that assist in planning for and monitoring key activities, such as accreditation, academic program planning, student success initiatives, enrollment management, campus rankings, and short- and long-range strategic planning.

    Oversee the university's survey research function to assist the campus community in administering internal and external surveys, working closely with stakeholders to ensure adherence to all regulations, policies and procedures.

    Assist campus stakeholders by listening to their data-oriented problems; analyzing the data needs and availability; proposing solutions to meet those needs; and implementing these solutions.

    Minimum Qualifications
    • Master's Degree in field of computational data analytics or related field (e.g., computer science; management and information science; statistically based social science program) or an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience.
    • 5 years of experience with demonstration of increasing responsibility and impact.
    • Supervisory Experience.

    A successful individual will possess advanced analytical, computational, and statistical skills, highly developed data visualization and presentation skills with the ability to articulate concepts clearly, both orally and in writing, and to listen accurately to synthesize complex requests and needs of broad stakeholders. Additional priority in consideration will be given to candidates who possess some the following:

      Advanced data query skills and thorough knowledge of PeopleSoft, Query, and SQLAbility to develop critical questions related to institutional data to support analysis of campus prioritiesAbility to assess, make inferences and improve data qualityAbility to use data analytics to provide optimal solutions to identified campus problems and/or opportunitiesAbility to apply predictive analytics to various student success measuresAbility to assess team and individual performance, provide constructive feedback, and make continuous improvementsAbility to interact with diverse groups of people in a collaborative, respectful and courteous mannerKnowledge of survey and research methodsKnowledge of multiple software packages, Including spreadsheets, word processing and statistical tools (e.g., SPSS, SAS, NVivo) or other qualitative data software analysis packagesKnowledge of business intelligence and data visualization tools (e.g., Tableau, PowerBI)Knowledge of a rapidly changing educational technologies environment and third-party products that offer the ability to use campus data to develop predictive analytic models of student success intervention programsKnowledge of higher education data definitions and student classificationsKnowledge of relational database concepts, including data warehousing concepts and techniques
