Primary Function of Organizational Unit:

The Division of Health Sciences is the largest and most complex division within the University, employing more than 700 EPA employees and 1,700 SPA employees. The Division is composed of numerous Centers, Institutes, and agencies such as East Carolina Heart Institute and Eastern Area Health Education Center, the Colleges of Allied Health Sciences, Nursing, the Brody School of Medicine, the School of Dental Medicine, and the Laupus Health Science Library. In addition to the Academic and Administrative responsibilities of the division, the four professional schools provide clinical services throughout eastern North Carolina in a variety of settings and venues.

The School of Dental Medicine is composed of ten administrative offices and four academic departments. The Administrative units include the Offices of the Dean, Vice Dean, Associate Dean for Student Affairs, Associate Dean for Research, Associate Dean for Clinical Affairs, Associate Dean for Extramural Clinical Practices, Assistant Dean for Dental Education and Informatics, Assistant Dean for Educational Support and Faculty Development, Assistant Dean for Academic Success and the Assistant Dean for Business Operations and Financial Affairs. The four academic departments are Surgical Sciences, Pediatric Dentistry, Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics, General Dentistry and Foundational Sciences.

Included in the mission of the School of Dental Medicine is to educate dental care providers (both dental students and dental residents) and to address the oral health care needs of the underserved population of North Carolina. The School of Dental Medicine meets these missions by operating dental clinics that provide both educational experiences for the dental students and residents and provides dental care to the residents of North Carolina. These clinics occur in both Ross Hall in Greenville, North Carolina, as well as Community Service Learning Centers located throughout North Carolina. In order to operate these clinics, appropriate dental auxiliaries and clinical staff are needed.

Job Duties :

The primary purpose of this position is to read and interpret inpatient/outpatient hospital, nursing home, ER, AMU, AMUSU medical record charts. The coder is responsible for assigning the appropriate ICD-10 and CPT codes using third party payer reimbursement guidelines. The coder puts this information on an inpatient/outpatient billing encounter form (ADA 2012 or HCFA1500 Form). All essential data has to be in place in order for the charges to be entered into AxIum correctly. The coder is responsible for overcoding the outpatient clinic charges. The coder reviews the outpatient form to ensure all the key elements (modifiers, 4th & 5th digits on ICD-10 codes) are marked for accurate billing. The date recorded by the coder must be accurate and precise to generate proper reimbursement for services rendered. The extensiveness of medical terminology complicated by the recurrent use of abbreviations by the medical staff requires that the individual have familiarity with procedures and treatments as they relate to particular diagnoses in order to interpolate the notes and assign accurate ICD-10 diagnosis and CPT codes. This position will also include current knowledge of protocols for coordinating and scheduling procedures/surgeries with multiple facilities. It will be necessary to verify insurance coverage for surgeries that are scheduled, i.e., action taken if pre-certification is necessary or is there a need for coverage verification. Post procedure appointments will be scheduled by this position. Patient inquiries regarding their procedures will be routed to this position. Cancellations will also be verified and rescheduled by this position.
