Departmental Overview

The Department of Mathematics is one of the largest teaching departments within the College of Letters and Science with annual enrollments of over 20,000 students including summer session. The department employs approximately 52 ladder-rank faculty, 30 emeriti faculty and 30 visiting teaching faculty and special research visitors, 15.5 career staff, 300 Graduate Student Instructors, 110 Readers, and 3 Work Study employees each year. The Department has approximately 200 graduate students and 900 undergraduate majors.

Responsibilities
  • Administers strategic academic programs for the department (i.e. the Solid Foundations Program, and the UG Upper-Division Tutoring program) and applies professional student services concepts, provides the full range of student services to undergraduate students taking courses in the math program (including both math majors and non-math majors).
  • Advise students and manage enrollment into departmental programs.
  • Supports and advises students with questions about the program or needing assistance with program interface.
  • Coordinate and manage program specific activities including partnering with the Student Learning Center to identify tutors for departmental programs and initiatives; conducting outreach to recruit tutors, coordinate interviews for prospective tutors, and assist with all related onboarding and orientation activities, as necessary; ensure that post-test results and individualized study/tutor programs are distributed in a timely manner to participants in the relevant departmental program; under the supervision of the Director of Student services, monitor expenses and budgets for applicable programs; program specific reporting to monitor and track the progress as well as to assess the overall impact of the programs on student learning; and act as a handoff to introduce students participating in these programs to undergraduate student advisors who will advise students post-program and on through their participation in the math program.
  • Develop and recommend curriculum planning specific to departmental initiatives in collaboration with Director of Student Services and other SSAs on the student services team.
  • Support departmental efforts to develop and launch new initiatives including student exchange programs and other UC wide undergraduate tutoring and support programs.
  • Acts as a liaison with the Deans' office on overlapping undergraduate support and development projects.
  • Applying professional student services concepts, provides advice and assistance to students on all aspects of their academic experience, including progression and requirement matters for the majors in Math, Applied Math, and Mathematics with a Concentration in Teaching and the minor in Mathematics.
  • Keeps student records updated and ensures that major electives and transfer work have gained faculty advisor approval.
  • Enters major electives, transfer work, approved substitutions, and faculty-approved waivers into Student Information System so that students can monitor completion of major requirements online.
  • Certifies major completion status to the College and ensures that student GPAs meet academic senate guidelines.
  • Coordinates and implements programs and workshops to support and retain international students / scholars. Identifies students with GPA or progress problems, advises students, and recommends appropriate course of action by the department (e.g. probation in the major, dismissal from the major).
  • Advises instructors and faculty on student advising issues.
  • Responsible for interpreting organization policies and advising students and faculty on student conduct, student grievances, disputes, and issues regarding discrimination.
  • Makes recommendations to Head Major Advisor, Undergraduate Vice-Chair and Student Advisor Manager for needed changes in existing policies and processes regarding students served in the Math/Applied Math major and Math minor.
  • Assist with oversight of the department's honors program and advises eligible students accordingly, ensuring that honors criteria are applied correctly and consistently.
  • Identify students eligible for commencement prizes and aid in the coordination of the selection process.
  • Confirms that students have met requirements for degree completion when there are no clear precedents or articulations, such as interdisciplinary programs or when transfer work is involved.
  • Plans and implements outreach programs to prospective and new students; advises prospective applicants on necessary academic preparation and the resources available to support them within our program; appropriateness of participating in the strategic departmental programs as it pertains to supporting the prospective applicant in their goals.
  • Plans, designs, and provides workshops for students to provide information about the department's strategic undergraduate support programs, or academic strategies and enrichment programs.
  • Oversees and may conduct orientations of new students participating in one or more of the department's strategic undergraduate support programs.
  • Support other departmental programs including the DSP accommodation and proctoring program including the management of all room request accommodations; programming and outreach to underserved students and prospective students; administer and proctor the "quantitative reasoning (QR)" exam several times a year;
  • Participates in professional development activities.

  • Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.



Preferred Qualifications
  • Knowledge of complex U.S. visa and immigration procedures, compliance issues, and employment eligibility / authorization for international students and scholars.
  • Working knowledge of advising and counseling techniques.
  • Knowledge of or ability to learn University-specific computer application programs and knowledge of or ability to learn University and departmental principles and procedures involved in risk assessment and evaluating risks as to likelihood and consequences.

Salary & Benefits

This is an exempt, monthly paid position. Annual salary is commensurate with experience within the range of $60,000.00 - $72,800.00.
