Position overview

The Cleveland Institute of Music (CIM) invites applications from creative and energetic candidates for the position of Director of Writing, teaching writing and overseeing student written communication. The successful candidate will serve as a member of CIM’s faculty and play a key role in CIM’s newly revised general education curriculum, which addresses the changing needs of its highly ambitious and accomplished students as they prepare for music careers in the mid-twenty-first century.

Duties and Responsibilities

Oversee the development of effective and expressive written communication skills in CIM’s undergraduate students from the first year through graduation.

Participate in cultivating high-level writing ability in CIM’s graduate students.

Create and teach CIM’s new integrated first-year writing course, the First-Year Experience.

Serve as a resource to instructors of upper-level communication-intensive courses.

Supervise fourth-year capstone projects.

Join instructional team in master’s seminar.

Establish writing center at CIM in consultation with Case Western Reserve University (CWRU), CIM’s neighboring educational partner.

Contribute to a collegial and supportive environment that advances the goals of the Institute, including curriculum development, assessment, and other faculty governance activities.

Assist with general education program assessment and continued accreditation.

Minimum Qualifications

Earned doctorate or ABD in English with an emphasis in Rhetoric and Writing or closely related field.

Two years teaching experience in higher education.

Demonstrated commitment to quality teaching.

Demonstrated knowledge of and interest in Digital Writing and Digital Rhetoric.

Desired Qualifications

Demonstrated knowledge of and interest in Digital Writing and Digital Rhetoric.

Four or more years teaching experience in higher education.

A musical background and/or an appreciation for music and the arts in general.
