As a member of the Client Services Team, the Senior Human Resources Manager (SrHRM) is responsible for working closely with a cross-functional team of Human Resources professionals who consistently strive to deliver comprehensive HR services in an effective and collaborative manner. With a strong focus on high levels of customer service this position is critical to developing, growing, and sustaining strong partnerships between the Office of Human Resources and the Administrative and Academic departments throughout the University. To be successful, the Senior Human Resources Manager must be able to collaborate and influence a diverse group of clients, fully understand the business needs, drivers, strategies, goals, and expectations of the departments they support, and provide thoughtful leadership and guidance on talent management and organizational effectiveness.


The Senior Human Resources Manager manages their generalist partner and builds a strong consulting partnership with University departments:

- Works closely with department managers, union leaders and staff; builds knowledge of functions and jobs to arrive at strategic solutions.
- Understands client impact on University mission, goals, expectations.
- Delivers best practices/creative solutions to clients.
- Provides influential input to promote alignment and synergy between departments and University regarding goals, expectations, policies, and practices.
- Identifies the need for organizational development and designs appropriate interventions
- Works with clients to build productive, inclusive environments.
- Actively participates in Labor Management meetings and other strategies to enhance labor management cooperation.

The Senior Human Resources Manager promotes organizational effectiveness and development:

- Strategizes with managers, labor leaders and staff to improve performance goals/expectations and execution.
- Partners with internal HR partners to deliver information and services.
- Leads and/or participates in organizational assessment and planning.
- Advises clients in working through complex issues such as restructuring, reclassification, compensation, and reductions in force.
- Develops and conducts surveys, interviews, focus groups and other data collection tools which will provide feedback and identify trends.
- Partners with Learning and Development to deliver customized training and educational programs.

The Senior Human Resources Manager proactively manages employee relations cases:

- Facilitates discussion and resolution of individual and group employee and labor relations issues and conflicts.
- Manages complex employee cases, ensuring compliance with relevant government regulations and University policy, e.g. accommodation, leaves, Equal Employment Opportunities (EEO), National Labor Relations Act (NLRA), Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA).
- Collaborates, consults and partners with appropriate HR and University partners.
- Conducts investigations or guides investigators as appropriate and assists departments in managing post-investigation concerns.

The Senior Human Resources Manager supports the vision and mission of the Office of Human Resources to partner with clients:

- Develops, supports, leads and manages effective cross-functional teams.
- Will have responsibility to direct the work of a Human Resource Generalist.
- Delivers Learning and Development-sponsored classes , either directly for clients or in general University-wide training.
- Leads or participates as a member on teams assigned broad University initiatives such as policy development or review, diversity councils, work / life task forces.
- Drives a culture of performance and talent management.

Other duties as assigned.


Essential Qualifications:

- Bachelor’s degree and 7+ years of progressive experience working in one or more human resources functional areas.
- Management experience, in particular within the human resources field.
- Experience with learning and development, design and delivery.
- Demonstrated working knowledge of all HR functions, laws and practices.
- Demonstrated experience working as a strategic partner in a relationship-oriented environment and client service mindset.
- Demonstrated successful experience working within a matrixed organization.
- Demonstrated strong oral and written communications skills; able to confidently present to small and large groups.
- Demonstrated ability to work successfully at all levels of a large organization.
- Experience leading high profile projects.
- Demonstrated ability to manage multiple, competing priorities and deadlines.
- Demonstrated conflict resolution skills, e.g. negotiating and mediating skills.
- Ability to travel locally on a regular basis.
- Ability to handle sensitive and confidential documents and information.
- Demonstrated ability to carry out objective investigations and fact-finding inquiry.
- Ability to carry out the HR responsibility in alignment with the University’s mission and vision statements, HR policy, labor contract, University guidelines and practices, and principles of management.
- Experience with MS Office (Word, Outlook, Excel, Access, SharePoint or equivalent) and HRIS (i.e. PeopleSoft).

Preferred Qualifications:

- Experience in a higher education academic setting.
- Experience working with labor union in a higher education setting.
- PHR/SPHR Certification; DDI certification a plus.
- Multi-lingual; Spanish a plus.
