Departmental Overview

For seven years, the Berkeley Institute for Data Science (BIDS - https://bids.berkeley.edu) has been transforming the process of data-intensive discovery and the institutional environment in which scientific discovery takes place. BIDS has advanced discovery by creating new data science tools, methods, communities, and career paths. And BIDS has changed the institutional environment at the University of California, Berkeley, by serving as the fulcrum for its academic community and its collaborators to conduct impactful cross-disciplinary research and training. The Institute is central to data-intensive research, open source software, and data science training programs at UC Berkeley.

Our programs and initiatives are designed to facilitate collaboration across an increasingly diverse and active data science community of domain experts from the life, social, and physical sciences, as well as methodological experts from computer science, statistics, and applied mathematics. At BIDS, we continually seek new and creative ways to cross traditional academic boundaries and engage a diverse community of researchers representing a wide array of disciplines.

BIDS is part of the Division of Computing, Data Science, and Society (CDSS), a dynamic, innovative new structure at UC Berkeley that represents a once-in-a-generation transformation. The Division brings together faculty, researchers, and students from computing, statistics, the humanities, and social and natural sciences, mirroring the cross-cutting nature of data science and redefining the research university for the digital age. Core to the Division is a commitment to examining how the digital revolution affects equity and opportunity—and building the capacity to respond to these challenges. In addition to BIDS, CDSS connects the Data Science Education Program, School of Information, Departments of Electrical Engineering & Computer Sciences and Statistics, Center for Computational Biology, and the Data Commons. The Division is responsible for growing Berkeley's broad-based data science education program, including experiential learning and graduate and postdoctoral training programs at BIDS.

The BIDS Executive Director is responsible for strategic planning and implementation, programming and operations management, and financial and human resources administration. The Executive Director provides senior management oversight for ~10 research and professional staff members and ~20 fellows (mostly postdoctoral scholars) participating in various independent research and training programs. The Executive Director also serves as a primary contact for external constituents, which includes significant responsibility for raising funds through gift and grant proposals.

This position reports to the BIDS Faculty Directors and is under the guidance of the BIDS Faculty Council.



Responsibilities

25% Acts as primary point of contact between the Institute and its foundation, government, and industry donors and funders; identifies and enlists the faculty and researchers from CDSS and the broader UC Berkeley community who are needed to cultivate gifts and develop grant proposals; manages relationships with key decision-makers and influencers from foundations, government, and industry.

25% Develops and implements the strategic goals, objectives, and directions of the Institute, and determines the requisite resource allocations and financing plans to achieve the goals and sustain the institute, conferring with the Faculty Directors and the Faculty Council.

20% Oversees the major research, training, and community building programs at BIDS such as the invited speaker series, the Cross Domain Initiatives (XDs), and multiple research fellowship programs for graduate students and postdoctoral scholars; identifies and enlists the faculty and staff needed to ensure the compelling and high quality programs for which the Institute is recognized.

10% Coordinates varied and competing requirements associated with managing an innovative university data science environment.

10% Manages the Institute's facilities, budgets, and day-to-day operations, and supervises the research and professional staff. Works closely with the Communications/Program Manager to develop public relations and other materials for external audiences. Works closely with the Administrative/Office Manager to coordinate with Campus Shared Services on all matters related to financial and human resources support services.

5% Participates in assessment of program effectiveness, and recommends changes to program content, policies and strategic goals accordingly.

5% Serves on committees representing the Institute and participates in professional conferences, seminars and workshops.

Required Qualifications

• Academic background and recognized expertise in selected area of research.
• Expertise in administrative, operational, budgetary, human resources, and financial principles and practices.
• Excellent oral and written communication and negotiation skills, including political acumen, social perceptiveness, and an understanding of different cultures and social norms.
• Expert ability to work with a dynamic and diverse group of researchers (faculty, staff, students), sponsors, and external collaborators.
• Management and leadership experience in academic and / or government agencies and/or industry.
• Excellent understanding of and appreciation for data science approaches and innovations - as well as the needs, goals and deadline pressures on academic scientists across the disciplines.
• Advanced degree in business, foundational areas of data science and/or equivalent experience/training.

Preferred Qualifications

• Expert ability to think creatively and independently on concepts requiring advanced analytical skills.
• Expert interpersonal skills and ability to work with diverse groups to achieve results.
• Expert fundraising and business development experience.
• Expert negotiation skills.
• Demonstrated expertise building collaborations between academia, industrial and / or governmental agencies.
• Demonstrated expertise with program building within academic institutions.
• Terminal degree in a related area (PhD, JD, MD, etc.) preferred.

• The salary range designated for this position: $174,000 - $200,000; however, starting salary will be commensurate with experience.
