About us:

The Centre for Teaching Support & Innovation (CTSI) provides leadership in teaching and learning at the University of Toronto and serves as the University’s central teaching hub. In a dynamic and highly collaborative environment, CTSI provides support for pedagogy and pedagogy-driven instructional technology for all teaching staff and teaching assistants across the University’s campuses and divisions. Driven by the latest advancements in higher education practices and informed by emerging research in post-secondary teaching and learning, all CTSI staff work directly with faculty, graduate students, departments and divisions and in partnership with a range of University offices to enhance teaching and learning across the institution. CTSI’s course evaluations team is responsible for managing and supporting the University’s course evaluation system including the design of surveys, technical operation and support of the system, and statistical analysis and reporting of results. The course evaluations team is also involved in CTSI’s broader work in the areas of educational development, learning analytics, and the research on teaching (e.g., the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning).

Your opportunity:

The Data Projects Specialist, Course Evaluations serves as primary contact to, and provides full service support for the full cycle of course evaluation data work including data intake, database maintenance, course evaluation system configuration, regular querying and reporting of data, and communications. The Data Projects Specialist coordinates course evaluation projects, including scripting database queries and manipulation using a specialized software system, presents at informational workshops to divisions, provides end-user training on data tools and contributes to the structure and management of data using knowledge of the full cycle of course evaluation data work and their knowledge of administration system functions.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Configuring system features and applications in the course evaluation system as well as associated IT systems and databases to ensure course evaluations are efficiently collected and reported according to technical best practice
  • Troubleshooting and resolving technical issues with the course evaluation system and databases and/or encountered by end-users.
  • Producing statistical information for internal use and to fulfill stakeholder needs and requests
  • Facilitating educational workshops and seminars on engagement and use of the course evaluations by a range of stakeholders including faculty, administrators, and data/information stewards
  • Keeping well-informed on policies, procedures, regulations and new technology to ensure that course evaluations are administered according to university policies and guidelines and that the system is operating at peak efficiency as new processes and software updates/improvements are developed
  • Advising on data structure designs to ensure that data collected conform to standards and needs according to internal team needs (e.g., data analysis) as well as other users and stakeholders (e.g., central database(s), divisional archives, dashboards)
  • Analyzing and writing program scripts to extract, reformat and analyze data using SQL, Python, or other equivalent
  • Identifying and analyzing data discrepancies and taking necessary actions to correct errors

Essential Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree or acceptable combination of equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Minimum three (3) years experience working with large databases including database queries and scripting (e.g., with SQL, Python, or other equivalent)
  • Demonstrated experience with data management and data integrity
  • Experience with and/or knowledge of large-scale surveys such as program evaluation surveys or customer service surveys
  • Experience using statistical and technical knowledge to make informed choices about data entry and reporting (e.g., descriptive statistics, cross-tabulation, pivot tables)
  • Experience working within defined policies and being a resource to others on policy requirements.
  • Prior experience working as part of project teams and identifying and informing project leaders of issues or roadblocks
  • Demonstrated ability to identify and implement technical features and improvements in existing systems
  • Demonstrated ability to deliver presentations in large group settings to a range of users and stakeholders
  • Strong communication skills (written, verbal).
  • Ability to work independently with detailed information and large data sets requiring meticulous attention to detail
  • Demonstrated ability to compile and summarize usage data
  • Demonstrated capacity to follow established, detailed, multi-step procedures and practices
  • Demonstrated initiative and problem solving, ability to trouble-shoot data integrity issues

Pay Scale Group & Hiring Zone:
USW Pay Band 12 -- $70,427 with an annual step progression to a maximum of $90,064. Pay scale and job class assignment is subject to determination pursuant to the Job Evaluation/Pay Equity Maintenance Protocol.
