The Lamar University Information Management and Decision Support (IMDS) division is accepting applications for a Business Analyst or Business Analyst Sr. position with experience to excel as a team member in our Management Information and Analysis (MIA) department. The MIA department provides data and visualizations in support of executive decision-making and is responsible for supporting the university’s institutional reporting needs as well as data integrity and accuracy assurance in our ERP environment. The successful candidate for this position will be part of a Data Engineering group that provides accurate datasets to support a variety of analyses, data visualizations, and data integrity exercises. We are looking for motivated people with a demonstrated aptitude for technology, a customer service mentality and the willingness and ability to learn new tools and technologies. The successful candidate will support the mission of IMDSS by providing high quality, professional reporting services and timely response and solutions to customer requests.

The purpose of this position is to provide data set development to support university data visualization requirements, consultation on solutions to data related issues, and coordination on data integrity and accuracy within our application portfolio. This is accomplished by gathering and assessing information to define requirements, developing procedures to meet requirements, querying different data sources, creating reports, presenting report results, attending meetings, and training users on solutions. Other duties include attending conferences, seminars and training sessions, and assisting with the implementation of ancillary applications where appropriate. With an enrollment of over 16,000 students, Lamar University is one of Texas’ fastest growing universities. Position Responsibilities:• Works with customers to provide datasets to meet requirements for reports and/or data visualizations
• Serves as a leader for data integrity and accuracy initiatives
• Supports the reporting functions of the IMDSS division
• Works closely with functional departments to understand any data related issues they experience and offer timely, accurate solutions
• Provides problem solving support and ad-hoc reporting support
• Prepares updates on long-term initiatives for management• Maintains an in-depth knowledge of ERP applications and their closely related ancillary applications
• Researches database technologies to stay up to date on best methods for retrieving data• Works with internal and external groups to provide interfaces that meet provided specifications and business needs • Provides report writing by receiving report requests from functional users; interpreting the report requirements; writing code for queries; presenting results to requester for approval; modifying existing reports and interfaces• Provides problem resolution by using programming languages, operating systems and software applications; and debugging/troubleshooting problems with data and reports• Maintains and increases professional knowledge on a continuing basis, including engagement with professional and industry groups• This position does require occasional after hours and/or weekend support of operations

Minimum Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications: Business Analyst Sr.** • Bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited college or university and at least seven years of related experience• Capability to perform in a dynamic and team-oriented environment is essential• Strong SQL programming skills are required• Ability to write ad-hoc queries against a range of databases • Strong problem-solving skills• Prior experience working with vendor support groups • Prior experience creating system interfaces and/or integrations• Prior experience as an administrator or query and report creator with a reporting tool such as Evisions Argos, Cognos, PowerBI, Tableau, etc. • Experience working with relational database structures, primarily but not limited to Oracle and MSSQL
• Proven time management skills with the ability to manage multiple tasks, communicate project status and provide leadership and direction for assigned initiatives
• Ability to work with functional business units and communicate effectively in order to meet business need
• Strong Microsoft Office 365 Suite skills

Athletics

Last year, the Cardinals were Southland Conference champions in men's golf, cross country and women's tennis. The volleyball and men's basketball teams were regular season co-champs and the women's basketball team was Southland Conference East Division champion. The LU baseball program has produced several major leaguers. The women's soccer program is entering its second season. The golf team has topped national rankings in recent years.

LU is beginning to rebuild a football program. A coach was hired in 2008. The stadium and athletic complex are being renovated, and the Cardinals plan to return to the gridiron in 2010.

Campus Life

A building boom at Lamar University in the past decade has given students access to state-of-the art facilities for learning, playing, dining and living.

Residents of Cardinal Village, the modern residence halls, have private bedrooms, high-speed Internet and amenities including an outdoor pool, basketball courts and community centers. The new dining hall offers a bistro ambience with international and American cuisine.

Working out in the Sheila Umphrey Recreational Sports Center is like a trip to an exclusive gym where students have an automatic membership. Features include a 43-foot climbing wall, an elevated jogging track, new cardiovascular and weighttraining equipment, and courts for sports such as basketball, racquetball and indoor soccer. Competitive types can participate in intramural sports ranging from basketball and flag football to dodgeball, cricket and pool.

Making friends and building a social network is easy at Lamar with more than 100 clubs and organizations registered on campus. Through campus organizations, students can:

  • Delve into a cause
  • Nurture spiritual beliefs
  • Start networking in future professions
  • Do all of the above.

LU is a short drive from many outdoor adventures: a day at the beach, canoeing or fishing on area rivers and bayous, hiking in the Big Thicket National Preserve. Shopping and entertainment options also are nearby including theaters, museums and live music venues large and small.

History

Lamar University was founded in 1923 as South Park Junior College a few blocks from the current location. The name changed to Lamar College in 1932 to honor Mirabeau B. Lamar, second president of the Republic of Texas and the "Father of Education" in Texas. In 1951, the school became Lamar State College of Technology, a state-supported four-year institution, the first junior college in Texas to make such a transition. The name changed to Lamar University in 1971. The university joined the Texas State University System in 1995.
